Video X Pro Hardware acceleration

laurent-w wrote on 3/16/2021, 2:39 AM

Hello all,

I have purchased Video X Pro version 17.0.3 and I have not managed to use hardware acceleration, rendering movies takes litterally ages. For a one minute video in 4k, it takes more than an hour. The rendering window indicates "no hardware encoding".

My hardware:
Intel I7 10700K with Intel HD630 (enabled in BIOS, drivers installed and device visible in device manager)
Nvidia RTX 2080 Super (with latest drivers installed)

In the program settings, I'm using standard settings, I see that I can choose between my RTX (displayed twice) and my Intel HD but no matter what I choose, the rendering pop-up always indicate "no hardware encoding". If I look my my performance stats, I see that my GPU is idle (between 0 and 5%) and my CPU is around 10%.

In settings > program settings I see
Video mode:
standard mode (direct3D, hardware acceleration)
Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 Super

No matter what I choose there, I always end up with the same problem.

I imagine that 1 hour for a one minute video is not the expected rendering time?

Do you have any idea ?

Thanks
Laurent

Hi Laurent

You need to set VPX to use the Power Saving (Intel) GPU in Windows>Settings>Display>Advanced Graphics settings and navigate to the Video ProX.exe and assign the Intel Power Saving GPU to the application.

Hi Peter,

Great, thanks, I can now see "hardware encoding" in the pop-up. It's much faster but still pretty slow compared to what I was expecting. Estimated time for a 1:30 video is 20 minutes, is that something normal? With the hardware I have, I would have expected something much faster. CPU and both GPU are still under 20%, is there no way to use more of my CPU/GPU?

Thanks
Laurent

Hi

. . . .  Estimated time for a 1:30 video is 20 minutes, is that something normal?  . . . .

That depends on:

Which format and resolution you are exporting from / to - only MP4 (h.264), AVCHD and HEVC are accelerated on export.

What video effects/corrections, and any picture in picture or collages effects etc have been, applied or used on, to the objects on the timeline.

Try loading and exporting the Demo project as MP4 1920 x 1080 25 fps - if all is well this should export in around 1 minute using hardware acceleration.

@johneb Thanks!

I'm just finishing my first video with hardware acceleration. It's a 4k video (60fps) with only an intro template taken from the library, there are no effects at all. The video lasts for 1:23 and it took 38:55 to render it in mp4. That's seems very slow.

I'll try the same in 1080p to see if I can bring the timing down to 1 minute.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the source video files and post the results from the Text view.

Which export preset are you using and are you making any changes to it.

The demo project uses a lower resolution source video so you cannot compare the export times to what you are getting with 4K video, however it will give a good comparison with the results I got on a virtually identical processor/Nvidia combination.

We may also be able to test if the 4K video is similar, hence the MediaInfo request, and you let us know which Intro template you used.

My second test is not great. With 1080p, 25 fps, I have more than 25 minutes estimated time.

I have used the standard 4k 59 fps preset and later based on your suggestion, I tried the 1080p 25 fps, I did not change any of the other parameters.

I used the "flares" template as an intro, I only changed the text?

Thanks!

Hi.

It's phone footage with a variable frame rate. I'm surprised you can edit it within VPX let alone export it.

It will be adding and and taking away frames and trying to guess what to put where, what frames to add and remove. 14fps up to 60fps and then converting it to 25 fps? It no wonder it's slow rendering. I'm surprised you have not encountered sound sync problems.

@CubeAce

Hello,
Yes, it was recorded from a phone, that's the only thing I have for videos. I don't think I have the possibility to force a stable framerate. If this is the reason why it takes so much time, I'll have to look for another solution because it takes way too much time in rendering. Or do you know another software solution that could do that faster?

Thanks

CubeAce wrote on 3/16/2021, 3:57 PM

@laurent-w

It's a problem for most video editing packages and normally one would convert the files using Handbrake or similar software first to a constant frame rate for editing, as straight file conversions in handbrake are much faster as it's not an editor and the editing with a video editing package after is then a much better experience. Variable frame rate files are just a way of saving card space on phones and is not really done for any other reason than to brag about how many minutes of video you can store on a given card on a given phone.

Hi

AS @CubeAce has commented the variable framerate video is the cause of one issue, there may be more.

The range of framerate from:-

Minimum frame rate                       : 14.993 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 60.403 FPS

is excessive.

To fix this the video needs converting to Constant framerate using a video converter eg Handbrake.

If you use Handbrake these are the settings to change after loading your source video

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to re-encode the videos with Handbrake first and give it another try (probably this week-end). I'll keep you posted.

Thanks
