VPX export speed tests - strange results

browj2 wrote on 6/30/2018, 9:51 AM

Using Surface Pro 4, i5-6300U @ 2.4 GHz 8GB RAM, HD is SSD

OS Windows 1803 17134.112

VPX 16.0.1.255

I did some export tests to try to understand what takes time and what doesn't. Test 3-2 below was what annoyed me greatly. Something is drastically wrong with VPX to want to take 1h41m to export a 4s11f project. Even just exporting a 4s photo with no effects takes far too long. I understand that my computer is not a speed demon, but I really don't think that I should be getting these poor results for short, simple projects.

Look at the first point of Tests 1 and 2. A video clip exports faster than a photo.

Test 1: Export to MP4, hardware encoding, calculate effects on GPU, 1 photo 4 seconds long, full HD 29.97fps:

  1. With no effects: 10s
  2. NB Dual Booster: 45s
  3. Hit Film Zoom Blur: 30s
  4. Both NB Dual Booster & HF Zoom Blur: 47s
  5. Added to 4 above, zoom from  100 at beginning to 200% at the end: 15s
  6. Only zoom from 100 at beginning to 200% at end: 12s

Test 2: Same but on 4s of video from GoPro, full HD

  1. With no effects: less than 6s
  2. NB Dual Booster: 35s
  3. Hit Film Zoom Blur: 27s
  4. Both NB Dual Booster & HF Zoom Blur: 47s
  5. Added to 4 above, zoom from 100 at beginning to 200% at the end: 48s
  6. Only zoom from 100 at beginning to 200% at end: 11s

Test 3: Zoom Blur 4s11f - same photo and same video clip, mask added

  1. Without NB Dual Booster on photo: 2m43s
  2. With NB Dual Booster on photo: threatening 1h41m

Here are the export settings:

Here is the set up for the Zoom Blur project:

Here is the export screen showing 1h41m:

If anyone wants to try out the Zoom Blur project with the NB Dual Booster applied, I will upload the project to DropBox. You need, of course, NB Dual Booster (OFX).

Any comments on why I get these very poor results?

Thanks,

John CB

Hi John CB

I would say yes please to the Zoom Blur project, however all my NB OFX's are giving me a black Program monitor no matter what settings I change the display to.

Added: yet they work OK in MEP - definitely something wrong here.

Hi John EB,

Here is the link. There was a proxy file of the GoPro clip that I did not include. I'm still using my cell phone to connect to the internet.

I just opened the project in MEP2018 and the export proposed a marginally shorter export time of 1h34m.

Yesterday, when I was playing around with this file, I copied the video clip and added the HitFilm Radial Blur. The screen went black and I had to change the display to Compatible mode. Today when I tried the same thing, no problem. I checked the display just to make sure and it was Standard, not Compatible. Strange. The reboot changed something.
