Webcam recording sound is not synched

lighthope wrote on 10/29/2020, 11:14 PM

So am attempting to record from a webcam.

When recording, I have found that I have to wait several seconds before starting or the sound won't be recorded. After the recording, the sound is out of sync by several seconds.

If I am reading it right, it is a Logi Pro Stream webcam.

Currently running MEP 2021, latest update.

Hi.

The reason no-one has replied yet may be that no-one else here is using that webcam.

Your best bet at present is to track down exactly which webcam you have and find it's specs.

Then maybe someone here may be able to help out.

I did notice on the Logitec site that they have their own capture software.

Maybe there is a reason for that.

Hi,

I presume that you mean Logitech. Open the Logitech Capture program. What is the model number?

In MEP:

  • Are you capturing to PAL or NTSC?
  • File format and resolution?

Try capturing with the Capture program then import the file to MEP. Is the audio synchronized?

I have had audio out of sync when using MEP and my HD Pro Webcam C920, but it is only about 4 frames out, not seconds. I use the Logitech Capture instead.

Are you sure about it being out of sync by several seconds? That is a lot.

Yeah, Logitech.

I can't find where the model number is listed in the Logitech Capture programme.

Capturing NTSC.

I tried capturing with the Logitech capture programme and the video & audio is synched perfectly. So this is definitely an MEP issue.

Yeah, it's out of synch by several seconds.

@lighthope

This may well be an MEP issue but the solution was clearly given by @browj2:

Try capturing with the Capture program then import the file to MEP

MEP is not really designed as a "live" recorder, i.e. to simultaneously record both audio and video from an input which involves analogue to digital conversion and which lacks any sort of synchronisation pulse or signal.

That is not a solution, that is a workaround.

If MEP doesn't want to be a live-capture programme, then don't do it. But if it has the capability, then it isn't a small thing to ask that it work right.

Or are our standards that low?

Hi

. . . . That is not a solution, that is a workaround. . . . Or are our standards that low? . . . .

That is correct, and no, sometimes a workaround is necessary to achieve what you want, and sometimes an alternative is better - I would never use MEP to record screen captures, it is 'too heavy' for such a simple job, the same goes for using the 'workaround'.

. . . it has the capability, then it isn't a small thing to ask that it work right. . . .

It has and it does, as @browj2 has confirmed, I do not have a Logitech webcam, however it does work with another camera and no sync issues.

The large difference in audio sync issue is with your setup which leads to asking:-

Does the audio lead the video by seconds or vice versa?

What is your computer specification - see this topic for details required.

Hi.

My concern is that Logitech supply their own screen capture program capable of recording two of their webcams at once but not any other manufactures webcam. That suggests something unique is going on with the webcams drivers, hence my original comment. If it is ASIO based then there will be problems with audio as I know no way of two ASIO dependant programs of running at the same time reliably.
