Weird glitch at the beginning of every video I place in Magix

Hello!

I have a huge problem.

I have been making videos with Magix for a long time now and this never happened to me before(Magix Video Edit 2014 and I tested it with the 2017 version as well):

When I place a new video file(and I start to watch it in the quick view), in the beginning, the initial half-second is always a different part of the video (not the beginning, but a random part from somewhere else) or it looks like a fast-forwarded split second. This lasts for around 0.3 seconds and during that time the audio of the video plays normally. So this means that because of the initial half-second of "mix-mash" the audio will be out of synch. This started after my last video yesterday, which converted fine, but when I modified it a bit(lowered the volume on a segment) after conversion the screen was flickering the and the audio was out of sync.

I reset the settings, but it did nothing. Deleting the beginning of the video does not help. Restarting the pc did not help. Uninstalling/reinstalling the program did not help.

I am out of options. Please help. Thank you!

Hi John and welcome to the user to user forums.

You will find a lot of other threads / Topics, based around the same problems within this forum.

It has caused a lot of arguments among users here.

Basically is revolves around most editing packages not being able to read variable frame rate videos produced by either newer phone cameras or screen recording programs. To alleviate such problems we find it best to first convert such files to a constant frame rate file using a tool such as Handbrake.

Feel free to look for other forum topics on the subject. You will probably not have to look far.

I find this to be extremely wired since I use the same recording software and the same file format as I used before for years. I did not change anything about my videos and less than two days ago they were perfectly editable without any problem.

Can you, if the video recordings are not confidential, upload a short clip that is demonstrating the issue to a file sharing site such as Dropbox and post a link to it for us to test - do not upload to the likes of YouTube, Vimeo or the forum, as the file will be changed, we must have an original.

I am using the 2014 version of Magix Movie Edit Pro.

I actually made a video with Bandicam of my desktop showing the difference between the two clips: one is with the preview in Magix, where the "jump" is clear and visible, and after that, I open my VLC player to show that the jump is not there in the original video.

I can upload this video on YouTube if it can help identify the problem.

That, unfortunately, does not help eliminate possible causes of the 'glitch'.

I also think we need to know your computer specification - see this topic for details of what is required and please quote the processor, and any graphics card installed, make / model in full.

Windows 10 64 bit. The format I am using in my videos is avi, since that is the only format Fraps records with.

I have an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 six-core processor 3.40Ghz and 16gb RAM. My VGA is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650.

Hi John.

While you may have got MEP 2014 to run on Windows 10 it probably isn't optimised for it.

Also if the files are using HEVC there is no mention of support for HEVC within MEP2014. There could be a combination of issues going on here. That I don't know, as it's before my time with Movie Edit Pro.

I also have no experience with the Fraps screen recorder which could also be producing problem files for MEP.

FRAPS, a blast from the past, that in itself has a few issues that must be fixed before the video is brought into MEP:

  1. FRAPS records Variable Frame Rate (VFR), which is what @CubeAce suspected above. The frame rate setting in FRAPS is a target value about which the true frame rate can vary. If you have bench marking enable during recording you should see the range of values in the MinMaxAvg log file.
     
  2. If you also recorded audio then, depending on the audio format, you may have to convert it to 48 kHz sample rate.
     
  3. Due to the large amount of data FRAPS records bringing the raw AVI file into MEP may be overloading the system due to not being able to process the data fast enough resulting in skipping. This is a known issue with the playing of raw FRAPS video in some players and may also be affecting MEP.

It is generally recommended that the FRAPS AVI files are compressed to a more standard format for editing.

The MediaInfo data on a clip should confirm, or not, the above.

Okay, I converted my files from FRAPS avi to mkv.

It seems like this solved the issue. So I guess I just have to convert the files I want to work with from now on. A bit of a hassle, since I work with a lot of files, but it is better than not being able to use the editing software.
