What PC should I buy?

jak.willis wrote on 8/13/2023, 10:59 AM

Hi,

Following my disaster with the PC blowing up last week, I am now faced with the dilemma of which new PC to buy.

Because I’m having to buy a new computer, I would like to get a fairly good one (better than my last), with a processor that will be able to handle video editing with little to no lag problems.

I have been looking at various PC makes, including Lenovo, Dell, and HP.

Any help and suggestions will be much appreciated.

I am using a beelink PC with a ryzen cpu and 32 gb ram. Works great. I do work with FL studio + acid pro. Even do a bit of work with Vegas on it.

Hi Jak

For Magix Movie Studio or Video Pro X I would suggest you get the following (in general terms) which willl provide some future proofing.

  • Intel processor with integrated GPU preferably at least a generation 10 or later eg i5-10xxx or i7-10xxx. Note - Movie Studio and Video Pro X are optimised for Intel based systems.

  • A Nvidia RTX 20xx series GPU, if funds allow a RTX30xx series - this will do the majority of hardware acceleration. when required - see item 1 below

  • 16Gb of RAM minimum

  • 512GB minimum SSD drive for Windows and programs, and a second hard drive, or SSD if funds allow, at least 2TB as a working disc for the video/image files.

  • Windows 11

Things to avoid:

  1. AMD processor based systems, while these may be good with Vegas pro, they are not the best option for MMS/VPX. Some effects in MMS/VPX are not accelerated on a Nvidia or AMD GPU, however they can use the Intel integrated GPU or an Intel ARC GPU (alternative to a Nvidia GPU - currently expensive) without this the effects will be processed using the CPU.

  2. A laptop with a 15" screen - this is too small for video editing comfortably, I find 17" to be more comfortable see the specs in my signature.

  3. Too small a drive for Windows and programs - at least 512GB for Windows and programs with a second drive for working files, or 2TB or more if not using a second drive.

Thank you for the details, John. I’m looking to upgrade 10-year-old pc (i5, 3rd gen) to move up from MEP 2021 to MMS and I’ve found a plethora of $1000 computers that have the i7-13700F, which does not have integrated graphics but comes bundled with RTX 4060 GPU. Even with a good dedicated GPU, is the lack of integrated graphics a deal breaker? Also, can you briefly explain the differences between how MMS utilizes integrated graphics vs. dedicated? TIA for your advice.

Hi

. . . . is the lack of integrated graphics a deal breaker? . . . .

The answer depends on how much versatility you want for options for hardware acceleration, you need to look at the effects you use the most and determine if they are accelerated by one or the other, or both GPU's

There are some effects which are not hardware accelerated by an RTX GPU and however will be by an integrated GPU, and there are other effects which are not accelerated at all and are processed using the CPU, eg Brightness/Contrast.

Putting 3rd party Add ons into the mix, they are in the same situation, some effects, eg Neat Video and Mocha Pro will take advantage of Nvidia GPU's but not Intel.

Personally, I would go for the i7-13700K as I have a mix of software, some is hardware accelerated by the iGPU and others by the RTX.
