Which version MS (or) MEP?

CarpentersMate wrote on 6/3/2022, 3:35 AM

Hello Gang

Does anyone know which version of MS (or) MEP first introduced the option of switching graphics priority? Sorry I may not be asking in correct terminology, but its my understanding (for the longest time), all versions of MEP were dependent on the performance of an iGPU, never on a GPU? I may be mistaken but was led to believe changes have been gradually made directly relating to this issue?

Thank You

And for other software: Two Mac Pro Desktops with PCI & PCIe Soundcards & nVidia GeForce Graphics Cards - Mimimum memory of 16GB with #10 2TB esata Twin External Drives.

Hi MIke

. . . . first introduced the option of switching graphics priority? . . . .

That would be a very long time ago, IIRC MEP has had the option of setting the GPU for at least since MEP14, and possibly earlier versions, it was then the Video mode option in the program settings.

Modifying you question slightly - individual assignable options for which GPU to use for Importing, Processing (of effects etc) and Export was introduced with MEP/MMS 2022.

When NVidia dropped the 'CUDA' encoding (2014) MEP 2015(IIRC) and later versions relied on the Intel iGPU, until MEP 2021 when using a NVidia GPU with the NVENC feature has been available.

Hi Mike.

As I said on your other topic, I don't know about earlier releases of the product before the 2018 release but even back then the program was using both inboard GPU as well as an added nvidia graphics card if both could be enabled (again as I described in your other topic) The individual user at that time had less control over which was used by the program. I don't remember whether before Windows 10 if I could use options within Windows to select a power option for an individual program. I don't think so. I think it was only the general power options you had when setting up Windows which at the time was really there to conserve battery power on laptops I think but don't quote me. I tend to forget non relevant data as it becomes obsolete to my current needs. I have observed that in others in the past and I am now suffering the same fate.😂

While I agree with John Bakers assessment that for now just loading a copy of MEP 2016 onto a copy of Win 10 is your best option from a familiarity point of view, the current version of the program is much more flexible and different combinations of how it is set up can result in better (or worse) performance results for any given system and type of use. The one thing you have not mentioned yet is how much ram you intend to have. Personally I would recommend for you 8GB minimum. Preferably as 2 x 4GB sticks.

The 2016 version will also be much less demanding on your proposed system and should run smoothly regardless of how it is set up. The only difference you should find if you can enable both GPUs is a much decreased export time and if you use it, better performance from Neat Video.

Hi Mike.

Sorry I missed the amount of ram. 32 GB is more than enough 😀.

Not sure whether the creative sound card is needed or not. I haven't used a dedicated sound card myself for over 10 years now. There is no real latency advantage any more and the quality of the inboard chip is better than my analog audio gear it plugged into. It would also give your power supply a bit more headroom as well. The only advantage may be if the sockets are better quality and make a better connection. While as John noted the nvidia card will not help with hardware encoding it does take away some stress in my opinion on the Intel GPU as it will handle more of the 3D (2D) rendering.

I do feel most of this is academic though as the system should cope easily with HD sized files. Especially if you stuck to using MEP 2016 as it was designed to run on much lower specified systems that you are currently putting together.

Using MEP to record content I'm not so sure of as it is something I never do.

(afternoon tea time here 🤣)

Hi Mike.

Just for you,I have imported a 50fps HD clip into MEP 2022 and set the program to use only the Intel HD630.

That the program can't actually completely do if the nvidia card is active, but the program mainly just pinches a bit of the nvidia cards' vram and not much else.

The playback was buttery smooth and it hardly touched using the CPU. I expect the rendering to go as smoothly.

Ray ...

Thanks for the successful experiment. What can we take away from this?

Possible answers: That if I do purchase 2022 and install it in the newer system, the Application will indeed still function even (with the GPU active)? (or) Somehow actually use both iGPU and GPU? Whatever ....I really need to just jump in and try installing MEP2016 in the new system ... And BTW, can I drag over the original install file? But I'll need to activate MEP again in the other system?

(or)

Perhaps Magix will NOT allow me to install the App in 2 different machines?

PS: Hey Ray, (come on man): "Not sure whether the creative sound card is needed or not" ?? You should know by now (I'm an old man), doing sound & original music since HS and sometimes require an 'inexpensive means' of inputting 'outside sources' ... short of buying an interface. But actually most of my sound work is done on my Mac Pro ...

Anyway thanks again ... 😉

Mike, beware MMS2022. The Section effect does not work. It's bugged. Camera/Zoom shot works, and can be used as a clumsy workaround if you don't need to crop to non-standard aspect ratios.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. Yes you can, personably I would copy it across 🙂, on a serious note - you have 2 activation slots so you can have 2 computers activated.

If you have already used both activation slots then you need to de-activate one - you should be warned about this when you activate the new installation.

I would add to @AAProds comment - 'does not work. It's bugged' - the bug is present under specific conditions, when first reported I could not replicate the bug.

Hi Mike.

The new motherboard should have line in and out as well as optical. My motherboards inputs and outputs now automatically detect whether headphones or line out is connected and adjust accordingly as well as the inputs configure themselves for mike or line input based upon the impedance detected.

I've been using Cubase since it came away from the Atari.😂

Things have a habit of moving on.

Even MIDI had gone USB now so don't go around hunting for the MIDI port.🤣🤣🤣

Thank you John & Alwyn (a note for my friend Raymond below)

John

One more thing: are there any advantages/disadvantages to installing from an un-used unopened MEP2016 DVD I bought online, or just use the downloaded version? Oops I just realized the disc install might not have certain updates, whereas the download would? I've also got to get my email application working too ... *This is my first time using Windows 10 - I like it but still getting used to it .... And BTW Alwyn; 'Yes' this machine is terrific compared to that old war horse...She's a FAST one! 😅

Ray: Please - There's enough people down here in Florida telling me the Coronavirus is a HOAX. I've always prefered OUTBOARD devices. I need to 'input' 'Older Dat Machines', 'Digital Mixers' & use Mixer software etc.. 'No' There's No Optical In (or) Out .... Except for my 'Home Theatre' I don't use 'Optical'. I use a $25 Coaxial Converter occasionally ... Listen these machines are good but they were all intended for 'Office Work', in fact even the company I bought it from, installed modest AMD Video cards in all of them. Nevertheless I continually see this model 'REFURBISHED' and beefed up that sell for $1,200-$1,800 or more! This 2018 model was 'stripped' no OS, no Drives etc. (got it for under $200) and rebuilt it myself (saved big time)! So let me just 'dwaddle' please.... 😜

Best

Mike

Hi Mike.

Sorry, I was not going out of my way to upset you but my comments have been based on your worry earlier about the power supply not being overworked and may have been one component you didn't need and thus reducing the machines power load and giving your machines power supply a better safety margin.

I did not realise until I just downloaded a maintenance manual for your purchase that the Dell motherboard only has a combined Mic in and headphone jack and a line out and line in jack.

Speaking of the power supply. Did your Dell come with the 350W one or are you using another one?

Ray.

"my comments have been based on your worry earlier about the power supply not being overworked"

No problem my friend (once a Magix user always a Magix user) ... 😉 I'm 73 using Magix since 2006! 😎

And thanx for your concern. At some point 'yes' I'm gonna have to upgrade the power supply. But I can't right now, Disabled since 2012 - on fixed income ... So far no problems; with all this SD footage, hopefully there'll be minimal strain on the system. The current power supply is 290 Watts. Below is a review for the 1030. I have no idea what 'Unigine Heaven' is? Can you recommend an 'easy to use' temperature gauge? I use them in my Macs. Aside from Freezes, the old work horse Optiplex handled MEP2016 well. But I also realize MEP2016 will not tap into the 1030 .... We'll see how MEP goes in the 3620?

Thank You

Mike

@CarpentersMate

Hi Mike.

I'm only seven years your junior☺but not quite retired yet.

I wish we lived closer. I have spares of most components I'd willingly have given you a power supply as I share your passion for history and know it's importance.

Unfortunately my spare power supplies are far too heavy to make posting across the pond a viable option as I have bought the silent ones in the past that rely on huge heat sinks rather than fans.. It might also be a bit big for a small tower case.

That's an Antec 850W I just pulled off a shelf behind me. I only have that because I thought it had failed. It hadn't.The power off switch on my case had stuck so every time I booted the PC it got as far as loading the Windows start screen and shut down again. Not wanting to risk it being a power supply problem I went out and got a replacement.

That's what I got for not replacing my broken multi-meter.

I have only fully rebuilt three computers now and I think your idea of getting a slightly older one is brilliant and probably the route I will go as well once retired and on a fixed and possibly dwindling income.

I can understand your caution and wish you success.

Ray.
