For this type of question you will really need to contact MAGIX directly.

An AVI file can contain various codecs and we will need to analyse the file and test it, to see what it is.

A good start is normally to download the MediaInfo utility to analyse the file to see what it is.

I agree with ShadowDancer's comments.  I can also tell you from experience that AVI files are usually huge and seriously tax memory and cpu.  You have not provided any of your system specs such as ram, cpu, os, etc and what version of Movie Edit Pro are you using?
