Xara web designer crashes

sam-yates wrote on 3/29/2022, 9:31 AM

I am trying to install a YouTube video in Xara web designer 19. I insert place holder paste embed video but after 5 to 10 seconds xara designer crashes.  Also if you try to alter the size of a YouTube video that is already on the page this also cause the same issue. Support has not been very helpful as this issue is been ongoing now for a few weeks. It is the same for 18 or 19 and I have also just changed my computer so it just the same issue on the old computer as on the new one. I am running AMD Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon Graphics 3.80 GHz ram is 32.0 GB

Thankyou in Advance

Hi

While I cannot replicate the issue with crashing - I can get the video not to appear - there appears to some conflict with other elements on the the same layer - the following method may fix the issue you are having.

  • Create a new layer on the page and ensure it is selected in the Page & layer gallery
  • Add a rectangle and position and size it as required
  • Right click the rectangle and select Web properties
  • Select Placeholder, HTML code(body)
  • Paste the Youtube video embed code as you got from YT.
  • Apply and OK out of the Web properties.

Do not add any other items, elements etc on the video layer.

Thank you for your answer

I did as you suggested it works and it works fine now on any layer if you don’t tick the Re-generate placeholder image automatically. I was ticking this which I have always done without any issues up until a few weeks ago for some strange reason.

What you see now is just the place holder box and not a picture of the video on the build screen but when you go into page preview the video is there and plays fine

*Apply and OK out of the Web properties*

Many Thanks

@sam-yates

Hi

Thanks for the feedback. In my case it was pop-up layers that were causing the issue, your solution is also noted 👍

The existing solution is basically a work around and there is a better way:

1. Go to Utilities > Options > Tuneups
2. Make sure Redraw is set to automatic.
3. Change Gallery cache to 50.
4. Change Undo size for your current project to Unlimited (This is the only one you might need to change with each new project, but you might not have to, so only do it if it still crashes, otherwise leave it at the default undo size of 100 MBytes).
5. Check Cache Control and set Percentage of memory to use to 40%.

Now you should be able to work on your project without it crashing due to memory limits or leaks and not having to do anything else except work on your projects. I completed an actors website with multiple yahoo video and audio widgets on several pages in under 30 minutes without it crashing after I made the above changes.

Hi, I still have this use. I tried the 2nd way, the description from John with the new layers.
It worked for a while, but now the programm is crashing everytime again.

I can't find the menu's that guru is writing about. I have the dutch version, but I'm not sure which menu's to choose.
So after trying to embed a youtube video, it crashes almost everytime the programm.

I have the latest version: MAGIX Web Designer Premium 19.0.1.65946

Hi

. . . . I can't find the menu's that guru is writing about. . . . .

That is because @guru is using a 'different program' - Xara Designer Pro X which, in addition to the web component, has more features and functionality than Xara Web Designer Pro.

Has the regenerate placeholder option turned on again?

Hi

Try turning that setting off as the OP ( Sam) posted in the comment marked 'The Solution' above.
