  The files are MP3. BUT, the missing audio occurs only in Audio Studio, even with MP3's recorded prior to having this problem. The 'proxy' setting is for lossy files playback. I have not read any reports of that particular issue though.

  @scott-james This can be caused by editing compressed audio files like MP3. It's recommended to convert them to WAV first. If you enable to always proxy compressed audio files in the Sound Forge program preferences, this will be done

  ... but MediaInfo probably doesn't tell the whole story I've just been playing agian with this and it's true, Mediainfo does NOT tell the whole story. Using an app called FFprobe that came with the Pazara Suite I use an interesting anomaly has shown

  @Thej68cal The official MP3 standard only supports mono and stereo. There is a surround extension, but that's something different.

  @byeongho-Cho I speculate that this might have something to do with the MP3 decoder/encoder. Because of the way MP3 works internally, it will add silence add the beginning and the end of the file. Usually this are only milliseconds, so I don't think
