Batch Processor Crashing

@ItsMeTho Before reinstalling Windows, you might try to install the C++ Redistributables from Microsoft.

Here are versions 2015-2022, 2013, 2012, 2010, 2008 and 2005:

@ItsMeTho

Hi

After following @SP. suggestion above and the issue is not fixed.

. . . . Turns out I'm missing system libraries for some reason. . . Looks like I'm reinstalling Windows. . . .

Looking at the error messages you have posted in both this and your other topic on crashing, it looks like your Windows installation is in a bad state.

After the reinstallation, update Windows to the latest patch(es).

Do not make any customisations to remove Microsoft bloatware at this stage.

Install Sound Forge and test.

Ya, it's in a bad state alright.

I got a fresh install of windows with updates. And a fresh graphics driver, network stack, wifi driver and bluetooth driver. Reinstalled K-Lite Codec Pack. Reinstalled Nvidia control panel. My bios secure boot was disabled for some reason. Enabled that. Purged out the icon cache to force a rebuild. Another clean reinstall of Sound Forge. Double checked that the SF context menu entries that I had changed did restore to factory. Dusted out the tower.

The windows event viewer is showing "metadata stage failure" and the "windows wmis and network list manager can't connect to the internet". So we've been hunting down these problems. Tried all these things with a new user account and also safe mode. The computer won't connect to the internet in "safe mode with networking". I'm being told now to try swapping out my wifi adapter, because nothing else is working. Other than that I'm running out of fixes.

The wav conversion just keeps aborting.

I'll have a look at these redistributables but I think the windows install would have reinstalled those too.

My computer is cursed. I just want my sound forge to work 😭

Hi

. . . . Reinstalled K-Lite Codec Pack . . . The wav conversion just keeps aborting. . . . .

This may be the cause of the WAV conversion aborting, is there any reason for installing the codec pack?

. . . . network stack . . . .

Is this a custom stack required for your network/VPN or the standard stack installed by Windows?

@ItsMeTho Please don't install codec packs. To my knowledge this interferes with the codecs that come with Sound Forge or other multimedia software. For example, there are a lot of talks in this forum where codec packs were the culprit in errors with video editing software.

Better use conversion software like Handbrake or XMedia Recode if a file cannot be opened without a codec pack.

Which gives me an idea. Assuming there are problems with your WAV files that crash the batch encoder, you could try to simply convert them with XMedia Recode. After that, try again to batch convert the already converted files with Sound Forge. Maybe this time the batch converter will not crash. This would point to a problem with your source files.

ItsMeTho wrote on 5/26/2025, 3:55 AM

@johnebaker I think the k lite codec install was for handbrake or the mpc be video player or something.
I don't really care if I have it or not, it was just recommended.

The "network stack refresh" was just: settings > network & internet > reset. So by "new" I just meant reset.

@SP. So the k lite codec pack interferes with software, or the k lite codec pack interferes with soundforge because the devs didn't bother to make it compatible with the best codec pack in the world. ?

I don't have problems with converting wav files. AIMP and Gold Wave can do it no problem, even before I started tuning up my computer. It's Sound Forge that isn't doing it. Except for having blank uwp app icons and no preview pane in dialogue boxes, everything else on my computer is working fine. If k lite codec pack causes conflicts why is it not conflicting with anything? I went through its custom settings carefully and made sure it didn't assume authority over anything. So are you telling me it overwrote other codecs? Doesn't a media program choose the codec it needs to use? It's even installed into its own folder. There is no way for SF to even know it exists. How could one codec affect another one?

I decided to scoop up the Movie Studio package on sale too. I like the file browser. And yup, "movie studio capture can't install". *sigh I'm starting to see a pattern here.

We've already tried older samples that could have been corrupted (unknown quality). And a fresh sample pack download off the web. And also brand new files made in SF itself, generating test tones then saving as 16bit 44.1kHz wav. Then later trying to convert them to 24bit 48kHz wav. Nope, none of the different quality of wav files worked.

SF will convert from one type to another. I can do a wav to mp3, for example. It just isn't doing the one particular thing I need it to do. I want my whole library to be 24bit 48kHz to line up with my audio interface/s and be compatible with the video industry at every stage of production. I'm trying to conform it all to one standard to get rid of the mismatch headaches when I have other things to worry about.

I haven't tried that c++ redistributable install yet. I'll look into that first. But I wouldn't be excited to convert my library through a third party and then sound forge too. I'm pretty sure my wav files are fine. I did run some of them through NI Traktor Pro 4's analysis, which embeds sidecar metadata, but the files that weren't processed also won't convert.

WIW, with Magix's sister program Vegas Pro, installing K-Lite codecs is not recommended which can cause encoding problems.

SP. wrote on 5/26/2025, 10:21 AM

@ItsMeTho For testing purposes I installed SF18 trial version in a Windows sandbox (which means a completely clean environment) and batch converted over 6000 loops and samples from 16 Bit, 44.1 kHz to 24 Bit, 48 kHz. I did this twice, without any crashes.

Then I installed the full K-Lite codec pack, restarted Sound Forge and repeated the batch conversion. Worked also without crashes, so this doesn't seem to have any influence on SF18 on my setup.

Do you close the main batch converter window during the batch process? For me it slows the conversion down because of the status list.

Hi

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the audio clips that will not convert and post all the analysis data, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse the audio clip for all the data required.

Alternatively, we need a sample file to test. Upload one of the wav files that will not convert to a file sharing site such as Google Drive, One Drive or Dropbox, create the share link using the 'Anyone with link' access option and post the link in a comment.

@ItsMeTho

Hi

Thanks for the sample files, they are 'standard' CD quality WAV and they playback fine on my audio system irrespective of the audio system being set to 48kHz 16bit or 24 bit,

Using the standard Windows codecs, and those installed with Sound Forge, ie no K-Lite or other 'all-in-one' codec pack installed, the SF batch conversion does not crash for me.

I testing used the Wave (Microsoft) template at 48kHz 24 bit and 48kHz 32 bit (IEEE).

If these files are intended to be used in Magix Movie Studio (MMS) conversion is not necessary, on export from MMS the audio encoding format will be determined by the video export format standard used see note below.

Note: Video format standards are quite strict in the combination of video and audio encoding formats to be used within specific 'container file formats'.

With respect to the solution for your system crashing, I would suggest you raise a support ticket - link is at the top of this page, select Audio, Sound Forge Pro on the first page and scroll down to select Contact support, then select Send email options and complete the form that follows.

. . . . 'My System' section, "IEEE" is not "yes" under supported . . .

You can ignore the IEEE option, your system does not support it.

@ItsMeTho Thanks, I tested the files as well and the worked fine with the batch converter.

ItsMeTho wrote on 5/27/2025, 3:51 PM

@johnebaker Ok, this is definitely on my end. Right now we have exhausted so many options that Gemini thinks my wifi adapter is feeding windows incorrect info, causing it to think it can't connect to its metadata server, causing a metadata staging failed error, causing SF to abort processing. Don't know why this would be only a wav to wav issue though. I'll be getting a new adapter; it's getting old anyway.

I've used the latest Realtek installer to uninstall the old and install the latest Realtek HD Audio driver. Works good. Media Info is still not giving me a "yes" under pcm ieee float supported. And SF is still aborting these conversions.

By "fresh install of windows" I meant: Win 10 media creation tool: reset windows > keep settings and apps.
So basically fresh system files, not a total purge. Maybe some problems got carried over, but if it reinstalls the actual image then I don't see why there would still be missing registry keys or dll's or something.

I said that I want the conversion to be compatible with "the video industry". As in the standard audio format that the movie industry uses for audio. 24bit 48kHz is fine for audio production too, so it's good for both industries. Also helps a bit with lp filter aliasing and time stretching. I was going to convert them all to 32bit float but that would have ruined their compatibility options.

I have a support ticket already but gave up as soon as I saw them auto-reply with irrelevant knowledge base articles. I'll follow up with them I guess.

I have a problem installing NewBlue plugins as well. I will make a new post for that.

@SP. Ok thanks for checking. :)

SP. wrote on 5/27/2025, 5:13 PM

@ItsMeTho Have you tried Sound Forge in a Windows Sandbox? Simply enable it in the optional Windows features first. After that, you can start it simply as an app from the start menu. This will open a remote desktop window to it. All data will be deleted after you close it. The advantage is, this is a totally clean environment. You can copy and paste files into it. So copy the Sound Forge installer from C:\Users\YourWindowsUsername\Documents\Magix Downloads\Installationsmanager\ and your WAV files to it. Install and run SF and try the batch converter.

By "fresh install of windows" I meant: Win 10 media creation tool: reset windows > keep settings and apps.

If the batch converter works fine in the sandbox, this is probably the cause of your problem. In that case, I would recommend a complete reinstall of Windows without keeping any data on your drive. Before you do that, you can put all installers of your programs and all your project files on another hard drive. Then you can easily reinstall them if you need them in the future.

Hi

. . . . Metadata staging failed error, . . . .

Assuming you mean you are seeing ID 131 errors in the Windows event logs, what customisations to features, services, etc, have you made to the Windows installation?

What is your computer specification? See this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full.

. . . . I said that I want the conversion to be compatible with "the video industry" . . . .

As I previously commented, there is no need to convert the audio prior to inserting into the video editing program this will be done on export, unless you experience sync errors in the video.

By converting 44.1 kHz 16 bit up to 48kHz 16 or 24 bit, the conversion can introduce some quality loss during the resampling process.

If you are making your own audio recordings or creating music, then record/export as 48kHz 16 or 24bit WAV, with the bitrate set accordingly for best quality.

And I definitely won't reinstall windows unless I absolutely have to. It will take me a week full time to unregister all my apps, move over all my content and reinstall all the apps and set up all the settings again.

I suggest you don't use SF any longer and get a refund, same for the video editing apps where you cannot install the effects.

Hi

Thanks for system specs, similar enough to my PC for comparisons, though I am on Windows 11.

From the other information, this is definitely a Windows/hardware issue.

Assuming you are posting from another device, after doing the following, and neither work:

  • Try another Network card or dongle
  • Do a full scan of the Samsung SSD 970 (C:) using the Samsung Diagnostic tools.

then a clean install of Windows is the next step.

Once everything is re-installed and working, I would suggest you use some backup software to image the SSD drive in case of future issues, I use Macrium Reflect.

Good luck

@johnebaker I'll do a computer move when I'm forced to upgrade to Windows 11.
I'm definitely not uprooting my entire system and manually moving every single thing I own to accomodate one unruly program. I have to replace my wifi card and then I'll revisit some of these event errors. And it looks like I'll be buying R8Brain Pro.
