Cannot see video after import of .avi files

Alan-Wade wrote on 5/24/2023, 9:53 AM

Just purchased Movie Studio 2023. Website said it imports avi/DV files. When I import my avi file I hear sound, but there is no video. My video format is "DV", with codec "dvsd (Sony). Is there some download from Magix that I still need? Why won't it import the video?

I'm running Windows 11 in Parallels.

@Alan-Wade Hi, i don't know about dv avi but check this is ticked in File - Settings - Program, (or click Y on the keyboard)

Somebody might suggest chaging the Import... settings in Device Optons, I don't know if that affects whether an AVI can be played,

If that doesn't work can you share the exact media format, there's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here 👍

Like this

Also can you click your icon at the top of this page - My Profile & fill in your Signature with the full name of your CPU, GPU & amount of RAM, also inc the Windows & Magix version, this will then show at the bottom of your comments,

---------------

PS, in the end you might end up having to convert your footage to an acceptable format, free Handbrake will do this for you https://handbrake.fr/

Hi and welcome to the User to user forums.

You may want to read this article on Microsoft about the limitations of using Win 11 in parallels and it's inability to use DirectX 12 or OpenGL3.3 on an Apple machine.

To be clear, I'm not clued up on this subject but it could be the reason you cannot see any imaging.

Gid, thank you for the quick response! I confirmed that the File-Settings tick is there for import of avi files, then tried the available import device options. None of those worked. I did download MediaInfo, and the text for one of my avi files is below. I will also go look at Handbrake just in case . . .

CubeAce, that may very well be an issue. However, I am able to import and use all the other types of video files I have tried so far (mp4, mov, mts). I will go and read the article. Thank you for the tip.

One line stands out in that MediaInfo data as a possible reason for the problem: Commercial name : DVCPRO I wonder whether MS cannot read output which uses that codec.

As Ray suggest (and assuming I am right - far from guaranteed) Handbrake may well be your saviour.

What camera did the files come from please?

This may be one of those times when we need to request a short clip uploaded to Google drive for us to download to test to see if it is a software (program) problem or a hardware one.

Alan, there may be a no-effort software solution for DVSD import. Could you post a short clip on Google Drive for us to evaluate. Set the "Sharing" to "anyone with the link".

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

The files came from a Sony mini-DV camcorder 10-15 years ago. I found a short clip that is only 35Mb. Can that be uploaded here in the post? (not familiar with protocol/standards).

Will HandBrake convert to standard AVI? I just downloaded it and am starting to experiment. It does read in my DVCPRO avi files and they work there.

Alan-Wade wrote on 5/24/2023, 10:41 PM

I get audio, no video, with the same file. So maybe it's something to do with me running Windows 11 in Parallels? All the other formats seem to work fine.

Unfortunately for me, the majority of 30 years of family video are these avi files.

Former user wrote on 5/24/2023, 10:43 PM

@Alan-Wade Maybe I don't know anything about Mac's & I'm still on Windows 10, maybe you will have to convert them with Handbrake like I suggested, 🤔👍

Gid, I think you are right. It may be a lot of time and pain, with no sure solution, trying to find the issue when I've got the added complication of running it on a VM. Any recommendations on conversion settings in HandBrake, or do I just need to start experimenting? Thank you all for the help to get to this point.

Former user wrote on 5/24/2023, 11:06 PM

@Alan-Wade There's quite a bit of info on the Handbrake website, link i posted above, I use one of the presets, 👍

This is it, it's fairly simple

Magix MS has a Batch conversation options,, maybe try putting one of those through there & see?Your AVI works on mine but maybe won't on yours if it doesn't play 🤷‍♂️

Hi

Thanks for the sample file, it does import OK into MMS 2023 - like Gid no additional codecs needed. I have hidden my previous post which stated to the contrary.

As you are running on Parallels, in MMS 2023 Settings, Device options tab, check that the Import, Processing and Export options are all set to CPU.

Greetings @Alan-Wade

The reason I asked above if the file plays OK in a different Windows media player is, I feel important.

In the second post of this topic @Former user advised checking the import formats here File - Settings - Program, (or click Y on the keyboard) and check the AVI format was checked.

Can I ask you to again go into these settings and UNCHECK the AVI Import - do this from a freshly loaded MS2023 and before ANY video file is added - and then try to add your file (don't worry, the AVI import will reset itself the next time you load MS2023).

This will (should) use the systems AVI codec to import not Magix' (I think). It works with my DV AVIs on my system but then again I'm all Windows, not piggybacking on a Mac.

@johnebaker, I did try changing all 3 options to "CPU", and no luck. I still got audio with NO video.

@AAProds, I also tried putting the file in the Windows11 C:drive "partition" where MS23 is loaded, but it did not change or help.

Hi @me_again; the avi file does not work in the W11 Media Player either. I get audio, but no video, and a message pops up that says "dvsd" format is not supported.

But if I open an avi file with the "Windows Media Player Legacy" option, I do get video & audio . . .

I tried a fresh load of MS23, unchecked the avi import box, then dropped in an avi file. Same thing, Audio without video.

It does seem like there is a clue in that the W11 Media Player does NOT work, but the "Legacy" media player DOES. So, in fairness, it's not just a MS23 issue. It may be related to the Microsoft article @CubeAce suggested about running certain graphics software through Parallels from a Mac. I did try to read it, but didn't have the background to get any help out of it; just the idea that certain things won't work 😕

@Alan-Wade Hi, these are the two players I use, I don't remember the last time I used Windows media player.

CubeAce wrote on 5/25/2023, 9:18 PM

@Alan-Wade

I think the problem is that AVI is a native Microsoft supported / developed file type while Apple iOS doesn't natively support the AVI format or Direct X and the problem I have had trying to run virtual machines within Windows in the past has been that various drivers within the virtual machine don't seem to be able to connect to the hardware outside of the virtual environment. Virtual machines are good for working with spread sheets and and documents but I have found them lacking when trying to implement programs that need to access drivers / some file types, for audio or visual work. While some bits may work within a given program I have seldom found that all bits will work as expected. Arm based processors work very differently to Intel or AMD based CPU / GPUs.

If it is any consolation, certain Apple related video codecs will not run well in video editing packages running on Windows based PCs and also need conversion before they can be used.

In this instance though if Windows Media Player can play the file but Windows Film and TV can't then it could still be down to Magix software using bits of both players as I know Windows Media player has to be installed if one wishes to export audio to the mp3 audio format. It could be Magix is using the bit of Film and TV programming for the video portion.

Of course the latter is guesswork on my part but Magix has ties with Microsoft and it wouldn't surprise me if Magix uses code already available from parts of the Microsoft software to provide some of its functionality.

Apple and Microsoft are competing platforms after all and well known for not wanting to play nicely together.

Greetings, Your clip does play in Windows TV & Video app (and indeed every other media player/editor I have) on my "all Windows" system. To me this implies there's something missing (or being over-ridden) by the Mac side of things - I know nothing about MACs.

Just out of curiosity, on the Windows side what default app is set for AVIs (search default apps and open "chosse defaults by file type)? If it's a MAC app try settings a windows one - again I know nothing about MACs so this may be impossible.

Again just out of curiosity, I tried converting your file to a MOV file using copy mode for both video and audio. My favoured encoder (Avidemux) told be that it couldn't be done. Not wanting to re-encode as Handbrake would do, I tried Xmedia Recode, that I use on occasion, and this allowed me to save the file as a MOV that had a couple of interesting modifications to the Mediafile data - I have no way of checking if these modifications will allow playing on your system though - Left is AVI & Right is MOV

Also, would this be of any use https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2100?locale=en_GB - perhaps one of our Gurus should comment on that before you try it though.

@Alan-Wade

Hi Alan

A bit of a longshot, have you tried installing QuickTime for Windows on to Win 11, install the default components selected when you run the install -if that does not work then:-

. . . . MacBook Pro M2 . . .

Presumably you have the Arm 64 version of Windows 11 Pro installed in Parallels, if so then this may, as @CubeAce has commented here, be the cause of the issues you are having - Direct X12 support is required.

@me_again

Hi Andy, In the Windows environment the default app for avi files is "Media Player" (the new one, not Legacy).
