Ergonomic nit with Mouse Mode numbering scheme

pmikep wrote on 3/11/2020, 1:27 AM

Okay, I'm in the Time Line Editor. There are the 3 buttons on the ribbon that control what the Mouse Mode. In order from left to right, they are Single Object, Single Track, All Tracks.

I use them a lot. And to speed up my work flow, I'm switching over to using the keypad to switch Mouse Modes instead of moving my mouse cursor all the time.

Now, the number for Single Object is 6. I expected the next button to be 7. But it's not. It's 8.

7 is last.

Is there a reason that the numbers don't increase from left to right, 6, 7, 8, in the same (Western) left to right sequence of the buttons?

(As an aside, if I could figure out how to use Voice Commands to switch Mouse Modes, so that I could say "Select That," Ripple That" and "Ripple All," I would. I had that set up on my old Win7 box using Dragon Naturally Speaking a Vocla and it was a real time saver. It was like MEP read my mind.

I might be able to do same in Win10, with its integrated Voice Commands. But I don't know if that would grab the mic from MEP. And I'm at the stage where I'm starting voice overs and need the Mic for audio input. Not commands.)

Started with MEP 11, then 17, then MX, then MEP 2013, 2015, then 2016. Changed to the fast competitor after that, which worked fine with my non-Intel hardware. Then bought a used Dell with an Intel GPU, just to play with MEP again. Installed MEP 2020 Plus in March 2020, even tho I don't like losing patches if I have to reinstall after a year.

Testing on a Dell Vostro, <s>i3-8100</s> updated to i5-9400 w/ UHD 630, 16 GB 2400 DDR4 (CL15), Win10 Home, heavily NTLite'd. Now with GTX-1650 Super OC'd. Added a WD Blue M.2 for OS (PCIe 3), Apps, Temps and Video-In. 2 Monitors. A WD Blue SSD for outputs. (SATA III.)

Hi Mike.

I checked and you are correct. It's the same on my setup.

Maybe it should be added to the bug list?

No idea bout voice control. Can you use the MEP mic input while editing in the timeline?

Dragon Naturally Speaking. There's a blast from the past !

Hi

This is by design.

I have changed my keyboard short cuts and reprogrammed my Shuttle so the keys are in order.

To reprogram the short cut open File, Settings, Keyboard shortcuts, scroll down to the Mouse mode section - about 3/4 way down the scroll bar.

Select the short cut you want to change, enter the new value, assign and acknowledge the message that appears

If you end up with 2 shortcut characters remove the one not required or assign to another function.

Repeat for every short cut you want to change.

If the key is already used for another function then it will lose that shortcut.

For devices like the Shuttle you need to set it to type the specific letter (character) and send once assign it to a button.

Hi,

Yes, this has always been a bit confusing if using shortcuts. I had the 3 buttons programmed on my ShuttlePro and removed them because the 3 buttons are on screen so there is no menu to open or right-click select. I found that it has always been easier to click on the one that I want on the screen so as not to have to look at my keyboard, and this freed up 3 buttons on my ShuttlePro. I still have some buttons on the ShuttlePro that are also single buttons on-screen, like Undo, playback, play range, set range I and O.

@pmikep

If you really want more ease, get a ShuttlePro V2. I have 3 levels programmed on mine for Basic (moving around), Editing (trimming modes and copy paste effects) and Importing, along with various other related tools. I rarely have to go to the keyboard for shortcuts.

Thanks for the heads up on the Shuttle products. I don't know that I would fully use the levels of the Pro V2. But the Express looks like it would do what I want.
