Im getting this error message below when I try to open my video file on Movie Edit Pro Premium. Ive tried everything, but it wont work! PLEASE HELP! Does anyone have an idea how I can get this file back. Its a lot of work I put in

The file format of

f:\toolkit\backup\desktop\c\users\dell\MAGIXVIDEO\AAA SILENCED III BLACK.MVP

cannot be read!

Please make sure that the drive is not full or write-protected.

Hi Patrice and welcome to the users forum.

First, please make sure you supply details of your computer system and version of Movie Edit Pro as described here.

After saying that, there is little to go on with the supplied information you have given so far but looking at the line supplied I have a few questions to ask you.

First it say's. f:\toolkit\backup\desktop\

So are you trying to open the file by clicking on an icon on your desktop? That might not work for several reasons and you may need to go to the location of the file to open it there. That may still not work.

Did you use Movie Edit Pro to export the whole project to that location or just copy and paste it there?

Have you moved the location of the original project or the files used for the project to another drive or folder since making the project?

Any of the above actions may result in the message you have if MEP cannot find the location of the files used and may not be able to recreate the project.

First I would try opening MEP and go to the import files section and go to the location mentioned in that line you supplied and see if it can be opened from there. See if that works.

In general though be careful how you move your files around on your system. Movie Edit Pro is a non destructive editing program that does nothing to the original files but rather takes notes on the clips used and where they were cut, put together, and what effects are to be applied. If you then move the files MEP used without using MEP to move them it does not know where the file reside and cannot reassemble the project as the location where it thought the files were no longer exists.

Someone else may be able to help further on this topic and have another solution to try out but you may have lost your project and have to start again if what I suggest doesn't work out for you.

Everything that Ray (@CubeAce) has written is entirely correct and very good advice.

Unfortunately, in the case of the file you list, the error message refers to "***.MVP" which is your project file! I have to say I have never seen this message saying that a project file "cannot be read"; video and audio files CAN, for no apparent reason, suddenly become inaccessible but not the project file, in my experience.

So, do you have any recent backups of this file (they are likely to be stored under the same project name but with a _BAK extension? Under normal usage and unless you have made any changes to MEP's settings, up to 10 backups are stored, with the oldest being overwritten once that number is reached. In order to find that latest backup always check the date and time of its creation.

OTOH, as Ray intimated, the stated path to that file is rather unusual, given that it seems to be within a c\desktop\users folder on your f:\ drive. (As a matter of interest, I would expect that should read "c:\desktop...".) Is the file actually and exactly where that path says it is?

If so, have you tried moving it to a different drive, perhaps somewhere as simple as your Desktop, just to verify if the problem persists. As a matter of best practice you should not "store" files on the Desktop but there is no harm in temporarily moving one there in order to check whether it will open properly.

It looks like you are trying to open a file from a Seagate Toolkit backup on an external hard drive drive - is this correct?

If so you must restore the file back to your C drive and open if from there.

As Jeff ( @emmrecs) has commented - 'As a matter of best practice you should not "store" files on the Desktop' - I would go one step further and say you should never store files on your desktop, all files that you create or the programs create for you should be within folders in your Documents folder.

The Documents folder is a protected folder, and any updates, whether from programs or Windows will not interfere with the files located there. The Desktop can be affected by updates from programs or Windows.

I have just got the same error with a MVP file. It is on my C: drive and not on the Desktop. In my opinion the file must be corrupt. I have a backup file from about 30 minutes before, which loads ok. But I lost that 30 minutes of work. The project crashed out as happens quite frequently, and I couldn't open the MVP - nor did it ask me to restore so there was not crash report.

All I have is the corrupt MVP file. Should I send that to support to analyze why it suddenly became corrupt?

Unless you have changed the Backup interval settings in Movie Edit pro (MEP) you should have one no older than 10 mins from the last autosave. Check the rest of your backup files and do note that the highest number one may not necessarily be the latest* - use the Date/time information to fined the latest backup.

* The autosave is set to 10 mins by default and will cycle through backup numbers 0 to 9 and then start the cycle again.
