How do i resize without cropping or zooming in? on Graphic designer

andy-p98 wrote on 12/18/2017, 6:57 AM

How do i shut off the zoom or cropping when i am resizing on Graphic designer v15? It did not do this on the previous version.. i just want to do simple resizing to fit in layered collage. When i resize the photo smaller it crops and when i resize it bigger it zooms in. The photo does not stay intact. Though i do not want to crop or zoom in when i am doing this. Is their any way to shut this zooming & cropping effect when i am resizing on Xara Graphic Designer V 15? Thank You

Hi

Are you using the Scaling option of the Selector tool to resize the images?

I am using the arrow selector and adjusting it with the mouse but which ever way i use even if i type in the dimensions it either zooms in and or crops...

Hi

From your image - the wrong tool option is selected - see image below:

The blue arrow indicates the tool option you are using, the Crop mode

The red arrow is the tool option you should be using - the Scale mode.

It still does the same thing after selecting the scale mode as you pointed out with the red arrow...

As i said it does not have this problem with the previous version.

Is their a solution to this?

foetoefreak wrote on 1/22/2018, 12:34 PM

I am having this same frustrating problem, andy-p98. This didn't happen with my previous program, but I downloaded the new version yesterday, and I can't customize my image sizes without them cropping/zooming in. The image ratio remains the same, no matter what I do. What is our problem...can anyone help us...please...???

browj2 wrote on 1/22/2018, 2:43 PM

Hi,

Looking at Andy's image, you can see that there are new handles on images, starting with Xara V15. The middle ones crop, upper left rounds the corners, upper right rotates, and lower right resizes proportionately. I think that the lower right is what you are looking for.

Here is a link to a TalkGraphics thread about the problems/complaints with this new feature. You can't squash the image. You should also join TG as there is a wealth of Xara info there.

Hi

To add to John CB's comment - you only get these handles when you have the Selector tool only with all other possible options turned off, ie referring to the image below:

Selector tool (1) turned on

Show selection bounds option, (2) off.

Resize handle appears at 3

Thanks John EB, I didn't know about that one. It must have been turned off by default in the new versions. The thing that has changed is that you can no longer squash the image, as far as I am aware. Same with text, try squashing or stretching the text in selector mode using the middle handles. They do nothing except move the text.

Since my previous comment, I've discovered that, apparently, there's been a lot of chatter about this. Xara is working on a patch for this. It was thought that users of the new software might "distort" their photos when, in truth, it is sometimes necessary to do just that! See discussion here: https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthread.php?78179-Image-and-text-skewing-distorting-megathread. I was given this thread when I posted the same problem on the Magix Facebook page. I guess we have to be patient, which is not easy.  😫

Hi

@browj2

I get the same - the width, height lock, see image below, does not work - on or off it preserves the AR, whether you use the Resize handle or change the numbers directly into the circled options or the two options to the left.

@browj2...I see that you posted the same link I did, previous to my posting. I should have been more diligent! Bottom Line: This is a very frustrating issue, and I hope it will be solved very soon!

May I suggest that whoever notices the "fix" first, reports on this page? That would be so helpful!

foetoefreak wrote on 1/23/2018, 9:11 AM

@johnebaker...That 100% ratio can be "unlocked," but it remains in effect. 😕

.. . . . That 100% ratio can be "unlocked," but it remains in effect. . . . .

That is what I said in a slightly different way . . . . 'does not work - on or off it preserves the AR'

This is a temporary solution (not the best, but it works). Drag with right mouse click on the image to resize it.
This will also clone the image every time you do it, but allow the distortion.
Then delete the Clones and save the project to not consume so much memory.

foetoefreak wrote on 4/1/2018, 9:33 AM

Thank you, Potoco. I will give this a try! I can't believe the issue has not been resolved, after all this time. 😕

foetoefreak wrote on 4/1/2018, 10:38 AM

Potoco...I did end up with an 8x10 image, but also lost some of the image. Did I make an error?

foetoefreak wrote on 4/1/2018, 10:45 AM

Potoco: Here is what I'm getting.... You can see that it's cropped on both sides.

browj2 wrote on 4/1/2018, 11:32 PM

The answer is in the megathread on the Talk Graphics forum that has been mentioned a couple of times. Xara has still not updated the program to put it back the way it was, so until then, here is what they (Rob-Xara) say to do:

"As a work around, you could use the mould tool (Shift + F6), or alternatively select the image with the fill tool, hold Ctrl + Shift and drag one of the handles. This will stretch the image, and to uncrop it you can select the photo enhance tool, then click the photo and drag the side handles as normal. This will only work for images, for text I'm afraid you would still have to use the mould tool."

I tried the fill tool method and it works fine.

Thank you, browj2. I'll give that a try...if I can figure it out! 😉

browj2... All it seems to do is move the image around. Again...I can't believe they haven't fixed this, yet! 😣

browj2 wrote on 4/3/2018, 9:46 AM

@foetoefreak

You must be doing something wrong. Select your image, click on the fill button. You will see 2 handles, one at the top middle, the other at right middle. Holding down Ctrl and Shift, drag one of the handles with the mouse. The image will shrink in that direction.

Here is the result of pulling down the top middle handle whilst holding down Ctrl and Shift.
