@CubeAce

Ray, you did not respond to John's ( @browj2 ) question of what version of VPX you have.

My Upgrade service is expired and my version is 17.0.1.27 (UDP3) and I can also not find all 3D templates in VPX as I can in MEP (Premium).

MEP is 19.0.2.58 (UDP3).

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz
Operating system: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bits) OS 19041.450 (2004)
Memory: 64GB

@shgrude @browj2

Forgive me shgrude, John, I thought I had.

Same as Johns'. 17.0.3.68. MEP is the latest version and due renewal to update service next May.

To be clear, I do not have around six to nine 3D transitions that do not appear in VPX that are in my copy of MEP.

Off of the top of my head I can recount some of them. Snowman, Heart, Star or bouncing ball, not sure which. I am currently doing rendering checks so can't check. Then again I have access to LUTS, LAB, Levels, and Broadcast colour, so win some, lose some.

New Blue Titler 6 is still not responding in either program. It opens but as soon as I try to use it, it freezes, but I have Borris Titler so not short of animated titling if I need it. Between the two programs I have pretty much all I need. I have noticed the art filter works better in VPX. Some effects seem to be there but in different folders to MEP, but that may be me imagining things. Also is it me or do some third party effects now have additional controls when opened? It's going to take me a month or two to slowly get around the differences so not disappointed.

I have as yet to download anything else from the Humble Bundle package.

Ray.

@CubeAce

Hi Ray,

Sorry, I confused the not having some 3D effects with the old story about the 3D Titles. You say that you got the 3D titles sorted out long ago. But that was in MEP. Now that you have VPX, do they automatically open 3D Maker?

For transitions that are missing, I looked at your images and compared the folders for VPX and MEP2019. For 3dMorph, VPX is missing some files for:

  • airplane_m7
  • jumping_point_m7
  • snowman_m7
  • star_m7

The icons are there but the effects are missing from: C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Video Pro X\Plugins\3dMorph

I copied and pasted the missing airplane files from MEP to VPX and they now show up.

Under 3D Basic, Slide Sideways 1 and 2 (aka shifting_cube2) were missing. I think that these were replaced at some point by Gliding (GPU_Slide) as it looks to do the same but has more parameters.

Looking at one of John O'Flaherty's images, he seems to have the missing one's but not the non-missing ones. Strange. He is also missing many of the main ones. With VPX, do you at least have all of the main headings?

I suggest that you not use icons for the first column as it makes it difficult to see what you have.

Hi Werks.

No it doesn't have the new engine.

Hi John.

[EDIT] I was wrong. Xara is working.

I just noticed he has some white arrows on some of the effects tabs. He needs to download those separately.

Here is my complete list of effects and Templates showing up in VPX. Not as icons just for you. 😇.

I am used to the icon view now John. The pictorial representation helps me remember what is in each folder.

It's how my brain works best. I don't remember names but do have a map like image in my head. Everything I have ever done in my life has relied on either my hearing or eyesight and sense of inbuilt timing. Images always remind me more of content than words.

I will try your suggestion with the missing files but what if they don't come into the free from copyright protection bit?

Hi John

And I don't even use proxies.😁 Other than possibly smoother playback, I don't see anything else.

But you do use preview rendering which creates proxy files in the process. Also IIRC you use multicam from time to time, and Neat Video, both that would likely benefit from the New Infusion 2 engine although I do not use either.

And during our discussion back in May you said this:-

pressing play on just my simple video clips, always the same ones for years, sputtered. Playback of these did not sputter with older versions but got progressively worse with each new, improved version.

Maybe Magix took this on board with the latest improvements which seems to be an honest attempt to improve playback performance on older (no iGPU) or lower performance machines, and here is your chance to find out by downloading the trial. What's to lose!

Hi Peter.

I've often wondered about preview rendering as it doesn't seem to work as well as creating proxy files.

I guess it's because preview rendering does a render across clips whereas proxy files are added to individual clips and alterations often are not as interrupted by changes in the smoothness of playback.

What has got me after some experimentation is that not ticking 'Calculate video effects on GPU' still exports faster on my machine than ticking it. It literally knocks a third of the export time off if I have an export that has a lot of effects added.

. . . . I 've often wondered about preview rendering as it doesn't seem to work as well as creating proxy files . . . .

Preview rendering works best on complex sections, or range specified, of the timeline eg the Intro project you were working on, will play back smoothly - it is also helps with many of the Collage templates - the only downside is if you make and edit in the preview rendered section you have to render it again.

. . . . 'Calculate video effects on GPU' still exports faster on my machine than ticking it. . . . .

IIRC we agreed this in your previous topic on rendering times and the various options to improve them.

With the option ticked, my nvidia card does a lot more work and the CPU less but is still slower.

I guess that surprised me. Also there seems to be many more hidden or not obvious features in VPX. There should be more online tutorials covering this as not much is mentioned in the manual. Magix should blow their own trumpet more.

So, as long as I stick to only using  brightness, gamma, contrast, colour, saturation, image size, cropping and position effects as well as various fades and mixes, the export in theory could still be quicker with it ticked.😂

I do so like all these little caveats not generally mentioned. Makes for a variety of experiences and the blessings of confusion for those of us with a less than an occasional study of the manual.

As John has mentioned we are agreed that ticking FX on GPU slows down exports with our higher end systems - in my case approximately 30%. Magix mention that this may speed up exports on systems with a weaker CPU and I imagine it might help on systems that have no iGPU.

So, as long as I stick to only using  brightness, gamma, contrast, colour, saturation, image size, cropping and position effects as well as various fades and mixes, the export in theory could still be quicker with it ticked.😂

I do not understand this fully but the acceleration of effects is I think via Direct 3D and a process called GPGPU computing ie General Purpose GPU computing where the stream processors on the Graphics card are performing calculations and sending this back to the CPU and main memory for further processing. This back and forth can cause bottlenecks in some configurations that can result in a slower process.

This is different to what the Infusion Engine 1 & 2 is doing whereby it is keeping the data within the graphics memory and processing on the hardware decoding / encoding chips within the graphics sub system, eliminating the possibility of bottlenecks for one, and utilising the power of the NVENC / NVDEC , Quicksync chip, etc. for faster processing.

How the two different processing pipelines interact when invoking the discreet graphics card when exporting HEVC material to HEVC, whilst using the Calculate Video effects on GPU, I can not say and have not tested definitively.

. . . . I 've often wondered about preview rendering as it doesn't seem to work as well as creating proxy files . . . .

This is where the infusion engine really works - no need for preview rendering even with 5 or more track 4K video collages, not just JPEG's!

BTW Ray - VPX has an added capability for setting up custom formats and resolutions for the proxies generated during proxy and preview rendering. If you are talking about a preview quality or smoothness difference then that might be addressed by an adjustment to the codec and format generated.

Sure Ray,

Select File > Settings > Proxy and Preview Settings (Alt+R) - the Configure Proxy and Preview Rendering Settings Window will open - select Custom settings (not available in MEP) - an extended Format settings window will open where you can select a compression type AVI Intra all I frame, AVI uncompressed, Motion JPEG, Magix Video MXV, etc - in the next box you can select a preset and then click on Advanced and enter a different resolution plus all the normal export parameters which can then be saved as a preset for future use.

The idea is that you choose one of the lowly compressed formats offered which are less processing intensive than H.264 or HEVC and adjust the resolution to match your original footage. The default is MXV at 960x540 so you could try upping the resolution to give a more accurate preview of your HD or UHD footage. Or try one of the other presets which when selected should align themselves with the movie settings of your current project (shown at the bottom of the window). It appears you can even turn on HWA to speed up the preview / proxy rendering in the MPEG2 Advanced encoder settings window along with the other normal bit rate and quality adjustments.

@Scenestealer

Thank you Peter.

That could be useful. I will see what I can do with various settings.

I'm already finding matching clips easier I think.

I bit the Humble Bundle bullet to give Video Pro X a spin. It's always good to have more than one tool in your video editing toolbox.

I noticed that a lot my plugins from Vegas Pro 17 seemed to have made it over to VPX. Boris Continuum Complete 2020.5, Sapphire, and various NBFX plugins.

One group of plugins that are in VP that I use is Ignite Pro 4.1. I see that they didn't make it over. I noticed on the FXHome Ignite page that VPX is not supported, yet I see some Hitfilm addons listed listed in some posts (unless I am wrong...:D).

I use an old version of Magic Bullet Looks 2.0.4 that works great in Vegas and there was never a need for me to upgrade it. I am guessing that this too will not work with this version of VPX.

Looking forward to the "brain stretch" with the software......

CubeAce wrote on 8/19/2020, 11:50 AM

@Reyfox

You are not mistaken.

All of my Hitfilm effects from MEP have ported over to VPX without any additional help from me.

It is still a learning curve.

Using three drives on my machine gets VPX exporting really quickly. VPX on C: drive. Project files on D: drive and rendering project to my I drive is significantly faster than using two drives. All of those drives listed are internal drives.

My only problem is too many new tools I'm tempted to use when I probably don't need to.

@CubeAce

Thanks for the reply. I'm using FXhome's Ignite Pro 4.1 with Vegas Pro. I think I have enough "stuff" to keep me more than busy. But MagicBullet Looks would be nice to have too.

I look forward to exploring the way VPX edits. It's different than what I am used to.... editing with the main track on top and overlays go under it.

Out of curiosity, will this ever support Smartsound? Sonicfire Pro 6 is always a part of my editing.

CubeAce wrote on 8/19/2020, 2:13 PM

@Reyfox

The only thing I find odd about how the track layout works is if you add a track from number 1 track.

Too many options just makes me fiddle where possibly I shouldn't. It does seem to handle my files better than Movie Edit Pro and faster.

I have absolutely no idea .

I thought that was just a Panasonic TV thing for playback. If it's not that then I've never heard of it.

Sorry.

I can easily adjust to editors that edit like Vegas Pro, Resolve, Hitfilm Pro because I've edited that way forever. I started editing with the Amiga/Toaster in 1990 doing a/b roll. That was fun. But the NLE's after that (DPS Editbay, Premiere Pro, Pinnacle Edition/Avid Liquid Pro, etc....) edit in a different way.

But,I am up for the learning.

Hi Guys.

I've just completed my first try at various bit within VPX.

I used auto white balance on a couple of clips and at roughly 2:15 to 2:19 the sky has completely gone nuts.

Any ideas as to why it would almost break up like that?

Hi Ray

. . . . Any ideas as to why it would almost break up like that? . . . .

Educated guess - running out of available bitrate - the action in front of the sky being allocated most of the available bitrate, leaving little for the sky as it is 'not moving' relative to the Santas.
