Thanks, I'll give it a try and see what happens. Doesn't sound promising.....

It's one thing I would really make life easier cutting to the beat.

Those that missed out really missed out!

If you got VEGAS Pro 15 and/or (esp.) the HitFilm/Ignite Pro bundle, then this Video Pro X bundle is nothing but a waste of money.

I think that's why many people passed on it. Lots of people on reddit were like "I already have VP15. I don't need this."

I still think it's a great starter NLE for VLOGers and Gamers, given the HB price. No the MSRP, though. MAGIX HB is always an older version, so they're trying to get people onto the software and score upgrades. I think that works better with VEGAS Pro than with Video Pro X. People see this as nothing more than Movie Edit Pro with a few things added onto it.

You know how badly people want to bandwagon in the creative space. Not having great mindshare for a product line is inhibiting, even at super sale prices.

Your above comment is completely the reverse of what you stated on the Samplitude forum.

"People see this as nothing more than Movie Edit Pro with a few things added onto it." Those people are mistaken and should look at the comparison chart between MEP and VPX.

For the cost of buying the Humble Bundle, I thought it was a great deal.

I have Vegas Pro 14-17, but thought that this would be a nice addition to my tool chest. And it affords me the upgrade path if there is something really compelling that I would want.

About people seeing VPX as nothing more than MEP with a few things added, the same thing can be said with Vegas Pro being nothing more than Vegas Movie Studio with a few more things added.

To each his/her own. For $25, even if it's last years "model" without the bells and whistles, I am glad that I bought it, along with getting VMS 16 Platinum.

WTF are you talking about?

I said that the bundle is dirt cheap, so if you can afford it, get it so that you have upgrade rights in the future. It's basically a super cheap investment that may have huge upsides in the future. A small gamble, if you will. They might address every issue I have with it in the future, making it amazing.

Or, they may continue to develop it as nothing more than a superset of Movie Edit Pro, keeping many of the lacks in an attempt to maintain UX parity between the two - with many of the same exact workflow limitations that make it mediocre for professional use. In that case, I will never upgrade it.

That, in no way whatsoever, contradicts my statement.

-----

Video Pro X is, indeed, a superset of Movie Edit Pro. The things missing in Movie Edit Pro are the stuff that lower end users would likely hardly use, anyways. This is why most of those users use it without issue - the same way people can use Movie Studio Platinum and probably never feel a reason or itch to upgrade to VEGAS Pro Edit.

Video Pro X is to Movie Edit Pro what VEGAS Pro Edit is to VEGAS Movie Studio Platinum. It's literally the same product with more features added on top of it, to appeal to a more "serious" crowd. My issue with the workflow in VPX is that it is very consumerish, and this makes managing larger products in the NLE a PITA.

  • The inability to use Clip-Based Audio FX
  • The inability to Nest Folders in the Project Window
  • The lack of ASIO compatibility - if you interop with apps that use ASIO, then either you deal with a really bad usability situation, or you switch everything else to use Windows Audio Drivers... if possible (Samplitude Pro X doesn't have full functionality without ASIO, for example).
  • Designed to interop with MAGIX's consumer audio editing apps (Audio Cleaning Lab, Video Audio Cleaning Lab, etc.). I hesitate to call it usable if you need to use something like Sound Forge Pro as an audio editor.
  • No AAF/OMF Support (Import or Export). No FCP7 or X XML Support.
  • Lack of support for [practically] industry standard CODECs like DNxHD. Pay for AVC-Intra? It's a $400 MSRP NLE.
  • Backward Track Order (upside down). Track order matters in video, but not Audio. Tracks on top cover those on the bottom. Video Pro X is backwards, and it's not logical for a video editor to work this way.
  • Defaults to VA Tracks, no splitter to separate Audio Tracks from Video Tracks. Again, Audio Track order is non-factor, but Video Track order matters. This is why most NLEs have a splitter between the two types - so you don't have to scroll just to see this (given most people use 16:9 or Ultrawide displays).
  • Lackluster OpenFX Compatibility (Ignite Pro, many NewBlueFX Transitions, etc. do not show up when scanned). Can only trust compatibility with what comes from the MAGIX Store. Everything else is a complete crapshoot.
  • etc.

If the next version of Video Pro X addresses 75% of that, I'd likely upgrade it because... why not? If not, then I won't upgrade. But why not pick it up for $30 now so that I can get a huge discount *in the event that these issues are addressed in a future version.*

This is what I wrote on the Samplitude Forum, in bold typeface.

Do you really think I use even 25% of the stuff I buy on Humble Bundle? Most of it is opportunistic investing, and putting myself in a good position to take advantage of good developments in the future via savings through upgrade pricing - should they come.

What makes VEGAS Movie Studio Platinum so good, is that it is basically VEGAS Pro with some features removed/limited. This means that the workflow remains intact, and it scales up to better-organized power users much better than Movie Edit Pro. What makes Video Pro X awkward for pro use is that it's a consumer editor with a few "Pro" features bolted onto it. This means that it retains a lot of the consumerish niceties, but annoyances to power users, that is inherent in most consumer video editors.

None of that is bad, in general. Just bad to me. In general, it just is what it is.

-----

And no, I wouldn't have recommended anyone with VEGAS Pro 15 + Ignite Pro waste money on the Video Pro X Humble Bundle, as Video Pro X has literally nothing to add to their repertoire. VEGAS Pro 15 is a better NLE.

The people who should have considered it were those who missed out on VP15 or HitFilm Pro, and don't have a machine powerful enough to run something like Resolve 16.

For those people, it is an absolute no-brainer, even if they only got it for VEGAS Movie Studio Platinum 16 and/or Sound Forge Audio Studio 13. Even that was worth the price of entry.

95% of the time, I make more money than I spend reselling the licenses for the products I don't need out of those bundles.
