Hi

. . . . The problem is when the .MP4 is dropped into VPX the video comes in black. . . . .

Are you setting OBS to use the h.264 codec or h.265 ?

Can you post a MediaInfo analysis of the clip that imports black.

@johnebaker

I am using x264
Every clip I have posted MediaInfo of has came in in black screen. Matter of fact every clip I ever dragged into VPX has come back black screen.

@CubeAce

Well to complicate matters, the i7 was on the machine that has VPX installed. My other machine is where OBS is installed. It has a much better CPU. I am using a x264.

HI Matt.

So I just tried to do this myself with a one minute recording from OBS Studio at 60fps and placed into VPX for rendering. It exported the file in 37 secs as an MP4 file working at 1080p. Played back with no problems.

Media Info from exported file.

Hi

I fthat too impotrs black can you post a short screen capture - non confidential - that imports black to somewhere like Dropbox or other file sharing site for us to test, it may show if it is the the trial version that is causing the issue.

I have similar problem. I have downloaded trial version of video pro x to how it is compared to the vegas pro (I have vegas pro 14 and 15). And after launch tried to add some video I saw that VPX doesn't open any video (tried mov from older canon 1200d, mp4 from newer canon 200d). I hear sound but there is no video on source monitor and previews are not generated. If I add stills (pictures) to the timeline they are shown normal.

Changing setting's to compatability mode doesn't help

Do you have Quicktime installed on your PC? I think VPX needs that to display .movs.

@Matt-Green

Can't you just tell us which Intel i7 processor model is in the machine you have VPX on?

@johnebaker

I also am thinking that the trial version has a problem with the x.264 codec.

Hi Stan.

Do you have any MP4 files to try out?

That way we could see if it is a problem with the trial version working correctly or the file format is not supported in the trial version.

Hi

. . . .GTX 2080 Super . . . I dont see this encoder as an option. . . .

Do you mean RTX 2060 Super - AFAICS there is no GTX version?

The NVENC option should be there - the RTX 2060 supports NVENC.

Which export format are you selecting in OBS?

What version of the drivers are you using and are they the Gaming or Studio drivers? For video editing the Studio drivers are more appropriate.

Added: these are my settings for OBS.

Ok, I have a recording of my cat from my phone from a year ago. Same exact problem.

Audio works perfectly, Video is completely black.

No GPU, No Screen recording software. This makes the 3rd different video recorder that is having the same effects.

It is Variable Frame rate but come on, if you can't do Phone videos the most basic of videos.

Hi John.

How old is your copy of OBS studio? It should be 25.0.8 (64bit)

Hi Matt.

The phone file is a variable frame rate problem. Look at the file info. MEP or VPX will not accept variable frame rate video. You may have the option to turn variable frame rate off on the phone. Some models allow that. It is only done to reduce memory storage. It's unusual for any variable frame rate file to be able to be played in most video editing packages. It will have to be converted first to a constant frame rate file to work.

I guess this software isn't for Beginner or even Novice users? I figured it was because it was put in the Humble Bundle mostly used by gamers with little to no video editing skills.

Out of the ~5 other video editors I have used, I have never had to dig so deep and make sure my file was formatted exactly in a particular way. It feels like if one bit is out of place, the application fails. Are we 100% sure, its not just some bad build or something? I mean if the software can't by default edit a Phone video, the most common camera in the world, what does it edit?

I know people are happy with the software, I just can't figure out why nothing I do works.

Can you post somewhere, not to the forum, even a short section of one of the .mp4 files that appear black for you in VPX? That way, other users can download it and test it on their systems, just to establish whether this is a "common" problem or something unfortunately unique to your computer.

If you do this you will need to also post here the download link.

Hi Matt.

VPX is aimed I think at the serious enthusiast.

Phone footage is not their priority at this point and difficult to keep abreast of and relatively new.

I think Apple started variable frame rate recording on their phones a couple of years back. Possibly as a selling point. 'You can get this amount of hours of quality footage on this amount of space' type of thing. Other makes soon followed but with their own variations, so their are a lot of adapted formats out there but is is yet to hit serious camcorders or high end cameras and doubtful it ever will, as the requirements of enthusiasts is often not that of people taking footage with phones although again that is a bit of a sweeping statement and there are users between the main categories I've listed.

I may well be wrong about that but there is always a consumer side of things then Enthusiast, and eventually Pro who don't on average look at cost the same way as others do and requirements are often a lot different.

VPX is not that bad or difficult compared to the Pro stuff but with adaptability there is perhaps 100 ways to get something wrong compared to how many 'correct' or ways to get it to do what you want.

It is a learning curve, possibly harder than trying to get to grips with still photography.

It's not deliberately difficult but it is very flexible and with flexibility comes a need to know how it works to get the best results. On average, the more you learn, the better you get at it.

Even the most experienced here are still learning.

My whole reason for being on this forum is to do just that.

Ray.

Hi Stan.

Do you have any MP4 files to try out?

That way we could see if it is a problem with the trial version working correctly or the file format is not supported in the trial version.

Ray.

I looked almost every video file found on computer - the only one that works are with mpeg 1 and 2 codec. Not a single mp4 file was shown. I tried canon mp4, phone mp4, some old physical computer simulations video, some random downloaded videos.

@Matt-Green

Hi

. . . . What do you mean export format? .mp4? x264? . . . .

mp4 is the file format - this particular one is what is known as a container file as it can hold many different types of codecs such as x.264 which are used to encode the video into the container file.

. . . . I don't know what type of drivers I am using. . . . Gaming, I would suppose. . . .

If you are using the default drivers then yes they will be the gaming drivers.

. . . . Software(x264), Hardware(NVENC) and Hardware (NVENC)(new) . . . .

The codec you need to select is either of the Hardware(NVENC) ones.

. . . . Can we flip that on its head? It seems every little thing can cause it to fail. Can you post a video you know works and I will test and see if it does for me? . . . .

The point of having a video captured on your PC is so that we can try it on our VPX installations which are fully licensed to see if it is the trial version that is causing the issues. If we supply a file to you it proves nothing if it does not work, the issue may be elsewhere.

The content of the video file can be anything that is non confidential, eg you just moving icons around on your desktop, so long as:

  1. it does not import correctly in the trial version VPX

  2. is recorded with the same settings as you have previously recorded

    and most importantly

  3. uploaded to a file sharing site such as Dropbox.

    Uploading to the forum, Youtube, Vimeo etc is no good as they all convert the file which negates the whole purpose of having an original file to test.

@CubeAce

Hi Ray

. . . . How old is your copy of OBS studio? It should be 25.0.8 (64bit) . . . .

It is - what made you ask?

. . . . VPX is aimed I think at the serious enthusiast. . . . .

VPX is Professional software, used by professional video producers, that is why you have all the meters, colour profile options, colour correction tools, dual preview monitors etc necessary for producing broadcast and cinematic video. MEP is Prosumer level, Photostory is consumer level.

I have been making training videos for our software for about 5 years now but in my free time I make videos of gaming. Is this application aimed for me? Or is it only owned at people who work at a level deeper than file formats and video editing? If I have to become an expert on bit rates, fps rates, codecs, hardware vs software recording, etc. I just don't think I have time in all that

I think the benefits of having a perfect file for me to test, is
If it works, I know its something to do with how my files are saved off. (Android, Camtasia or OBS)
If it doesn't work, its something to do with my system (VPX install, something else?)

The problem with me sending you a file that doesn't work on my machine is it could be 1 of 100 different things causing it to fail. This would have us stepping through each thing individually, not sure which is the problem.
Lets remove all the potential variables and start with a control video.

Hi John.

It was your screen shot of that part of the program.

Then I realised you showed the simple view after I'd posted. 😊.

Hi Matt.

PM me an email address and I'll send you an OBS file that works for me via a secure Wetransfer as my Dropbox account is currently inactive. It could help though if you did the same for us as it takes a bit of guess work out of the equation for us as well, but admittedly not all of it.

One of the reasons we ask for complete machine specs drivers and the like is to see if processors etc are even capable of giving certain results. Or to look at it another way, we are not the ones having a problem. Maybe it is because of the source files or the trial version?

One reason I got the Humble bundle offer was to have a fully functioning copy to assess for the price of a couple of cups of coffee. It takes me more time to assess a complex software program than the average normal time limits given out with trial versions.

Hi

I have put a short OBS video that works in VPX here.

@johnebaker
That file did not work with me either. So we have isolated the problem away from my recording method.

@CubeAce
You can download John's file if you need an example of a file that will not load on my machine. I have attached a DXDiag of the machine with VPX on it.

@johnebaker @Matt-Green @emmrecs

I just downloaded and tested the OBS file that John EB provided. I am not using VPX or MEP (any version or Build), but did test on the computer I am currently on: (TR 1950X, MSI X399 Gaming Pro Carbon AC, Sapphire Radeon VII w/ 20.4.1 "Gaming" drivers, 32GB Crucial Ballistix 2400 Mhz RAM, Intel 665p 1TB NVME Boot/Apps, Sabrent Rocket Q 2TB NVME Source, Win 10 Pro 64-Bit 19041.450 build "2004"). This tested with VEGAS Movie Studio 17 Platinum (Build 143).

The File ran with no problems. Just "Imported" the media to the bin, dropped straight to the timeline, clicked on "Yes" to allow file to set Project Settings, then watched as it played in 60 fps on a 1920 x 1080 timeline. Mediainfo for the file showed a bit rate of around 2,050 kbps, along with audio properties being AAC. File was in .mp4 container using AVC format.

So, like us that use the "Sister" company products (VEGAS Pro, VEGAS Movie Studio), do you have to "Accept" initialization/authorization of certain CODECS/Containers? And if you do, did you possibly "Miss" the Pop-up box and it got hidden behind other windows? That is a typical problem seen over at the VEGASCreativeSoftware forum, for both VEGAS Pro and VEGAS Movie Studio.

Just providing more food for thought!
