Movie edit pro 2022 V 21.0.1.111 crashes/blocks (= unworkable)

dirkc_be wrote on 1/5/2022, 12:48 PM

My PC:
Intel I7
CPU 3,20 GHz
16 GB RAM
Directx 12
NVIDIA Deforce GTX 1050

I've have installed Movie edit pro 2022 V 21.0.1.111 as an update on the existing previous version (the way it was presented) plus all extra's, but the tool was unworkable, because it blocked all the time.
So I've uninstalled everything that was MAGIX-related and reinstalled the original exe-file. Also the extra's that are included, which was already a dubious situation with a succession of windows opening and closing and giving errors (I only can click on "install"...)

The result: Movie Edit Pro has troubles opening big files (e.g. 0,5 GB), or is not able to open them at all, when working with smaller files, after some cutting and editing, the tool blocks. After a restart, the same situation occurred.

The situation gives me the creepy impression that all kinds of modules were thrown together and the result lacks overall cohesion!

So, this version is supposed to be able to handle 4K file, but can't handle 2K ones in a normal way. I'm rather desperate... I hate to have to fight against a tool instead of being creative...

Anyone that gives me the golden tip?

Hi

. . . . Anyone that gives me the golden tip? . . .

Please provide full information for:

  1. Computer specification and Windows version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full - I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

  2. Are the graphics card drivers up to date?

  3. A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab.

  4. Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial if you are not familiar with MediaInfo  on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip to get the full data that you can post directly into a comment.

  5. Was there any error dialogs or messages that popped up when the crash occurred, if so what was the message?

. . . . Movie Edit Pro has troubles opening big files (e.g. 0,5 GB), . . . .

This is a relatively small file for Movie Edit Pro (MEP) to handle - it can load 5 GB, and bigger, 4K files without issue.

Hi.

To add to John's comments and also based on your own comments I would guess your video clips are not standard video codecs. The only way to tell that is if you do also include the MediaInfo data from the video clips you have trouble with as John has requested.

As John has stated, the program does handle 4K video. I edit 4K video all the time and it can get very demanding of a system and depending on the hardware there can be limits as to how far one can go.

Nearly all of the footage in this project is 4K

This is the full timeline and track count and has got to the point where I need to use proxy files and limit the programs' viewer monitors' resolution and do a final pre-render to get smooth playback if I continue to have the effects in use at the same time. If I had a higher performing CPU / GPU combination I could do more before needing the extra steps. All the 4K clips are not HEVC H265 but MPEG H264 which is less stress and more easily handled by video editors in general.

All new editing programs are designed with the next generation of computing power in mind as newer cameras produce files or ever increasing resolution and complex video encoding. They will often run on slightly less than optimal equipment as long as it is reasonably new. The older and less high end the components are the less the system can cope with the newer processing needs of the program.

I have had the same problem over and over again.

I buy a new recording device and my old program doesn't support the file format so I upgrade the program just to find the system is then not powerful enough to run the program.

Sometimes there are workarounds, sometimes not. When dealing with other peoples problems we can't know what is not possible or what is possible without additional and specific information when requested.

Ray.

John and Ray,

Thanks for those elaborate and detailed answers!

@Ray: I'm glad that the program on itself seems OK! It was so frustrating for me that it blocked every time again I was doing something.

@John: I understand I have some info to collect and will do that - I hope - tomorrow afternoon.
Then I'll come back and report what I'll have.

OK, here is the requested info (see also my signature for the PC specs): the clip I want to work on is derived from a BluRay (for personal use!).

The moment I want to import it, MEP is already blocking. Even worse, when I reopen the program, doing nothing, I can't close it via the exit option, I have to force to close using the Task Manager.

Remember: I've uninstalled it and re-installed it already!

Here some settings of MEP:

I've also changed the format using "Any Video Converter" (to mp4), but sooner or later MEP is blocking again.

I have other situations in which MEP blocks, based on mp4-files, but let's start with this one, hoping to find a solution.

I hope someone can help me further!

@dirkc_be Hi, In Mediainfo choose Text from the view option, select all, copy & paste here.

A 2GB Graphics card isn't very much?

Hi

. . . . the clip I want to work on is derived from a BluRay . . . .

is the problem you are having with this/these clip(s) only ?

From the image of the MediaInfo data, the file appears to be missing the audio stream! As this is from a commercial BD disc, the Copyright protection system may be causing the issues.

If not and the issues are occuring with other video clips then try changing the Import, Processing and Export settings in the Device options tab to the Intel UHD 630.

Is the Focusrite the main audio device, ie it is selected in the Playback tab of the Program settings?

If so this particular device has been known to cause some issues, try switching MEP to the motherboard audio.

. . . . GeForce GTX 1050 . . (driver up-to-date) . . . .

Are the driver version numbers -

  • Gaming Ready Driver 497.29 (30.0.14.9729)

    or

  • Studio Driver 511.09 (30.0.15.1109)

Hi Dirk.

I'm going to have to agree with both of Gids' comments. We need the media Info Text view please and while a 2GB card should be able to edit 4K video it is going to struggle once you add a few tracks or use effects.

It should not be struggling with 2.1K files although I don't think there are any presets within MEP for that resolution. I'll try for myself later.

The fact you are having to manually close the program seems to point to either an unsupported file format or you are not running the latest updates to MEP 2022 which should have cured the shutdown problem.

First of all: thanks all 3 of you to try to help m!

Here some answers/reactions:

@John
...the clip I want to work on is derived from a BluRay: yes, only to give an example. I have the same problem with other formats, even without a clip on the timeline, sometimes MEP just blocks.
But here the requested info of that BD clip:

...try changing the Import, Processing and Export settings in the Device options tab to the Intel UHD 630.
That option I don't see. If I set it on "CPU", then I receive an error message:

...Focusrite the main audio device, ie it is selected in the Playback tab: yes, it is!

@Gid:
...Text from the view option: see first pic
...2GB Graphics card isn't very much: but enough according the specs of Magix

@Ray
...not running the latest updates to MEP 2022: oh yes!

I think we have to focus less on a 4K-approach, because the clip in my exemple is only HD. It blocks with whatever other format also.
All the specs are OK and - as described - it can even happen that I open MEP, do nothing, and can't close it via "exit".

So, in my opinion there issomea mismatch between MEP and windows, some weird parameter is conflicting, but which?

Thanks already for your next contribution!

PS: re-install windows is the last thing I want to do...

@dirkc_be When you say 'blocks', do you mean it crashes & you can't do anything?

CubeAce wrote on 1/7/2022, 3:20 PM

@dirkc_be

Hi Dirk.

First, the file is variable frame rate which most video editors will struggle with as they prefer constant frame rate video. If a frame rate is variable how does the program know which frames should be duplicated or dropped to keep the edit to a constant frame rate? At best the result could look jittery when edited and at worst the audio can go badly out of sync. Video editors are mainly tools to edit footage from video cameras and not so much for editing captured screen recordings or any form of variable frame rate recordings. You need to find a way to produce either constant frame rate clips or you need to convert them to a constant frame rate using Handbrake or similar.

Second. If you have had the program for more than 12 months you won't get any further updates, especially if you upgraded via the updates from MEP 2021. So the current version is 21.0.1.111. You can check your version under Help in the program. Harsh I know if updates come out after your 12 months are up but that is the policy.

Ray.

Hi Dirk.

If the converted files are not working (and it might be a good idea to now use MediaInfo again on one of the converted files to see if it is a better encoding) and you are absolutely sure you are running one of the two nvidia driver versions that John has given you, then the only things I can think of is the amount of C: drive space left. To my mind I would have at least 20GB of free space on a C: drive for system and project temp files to move around on. Also try not to have too many other programs running in the background. I have about 8. Such as antivirus, Samsung Magician, etc. Close all unused tabs in a web browser for instance.

In your signature you have your D: drive down as being a BDD. What is that?

Also where are the project files kept? Never use cloud storage for such files.

Did you try switching audio drivers as John suggested?

I also think 6 audio buffers are too many. Try four.

Ray.

Hi Dirk

As Ray has mentioned - Please do not show personal information such as access codes on the forum. I have deleted the image.

Have you tried simply doing a hard "Restart" of Windows as sometimes a stuck windows update can cause problems with only a "Shut Down" and "Start".

Also try "Resetting Program to Defaults" from the File menu in MEP as this sometimes helps as it puts the settings to the most favourable for typical hardware..

Helly guys!

Here my responses on your comments:

@John
- I've installed: Studio Driver 511.09 (30.0.15.1109) - Jan 4, 2022 (this is REALLY new!). It is always a good idea to use more recent drivers. Mine was still a Microsoft one.

@Ray
- MediaInfo: yes, I will use it for all my import files. That was a handy suggestion!
- D-drive is a HDD (type error - wrong line on my keyboard)
- Switching audio drivers: no, I've never had any sound related error, so if nothing will repair my problem, that will be my last option to try
- 4 audio buffers instead of 6: after resetting the default values of MEP, it was turned in 6 again, so for the moment I'll leave it like that

@Scenestealer
- Access code: thanks for drawing my attention on that!
- Restart of windows: oh yes, I do it often!
- Resetting program to defaults from the file menu MEP: done!

So, I have to retry a number of things and rethink the kind of project I want to make and that will take a couple of days.

Thanks a lot for all that useful information and I'll come back with the (end?) results soon! In the meantime I've learned already some useful stuff!

Hi Dirk.

The reason I would try altering the audio is if the buffer settings are more than needed it can effect video playback.

Restarting windows is not a complete individual shutdown and restart of Windows but actually using the Restart button which clears a lot of unused settings. (Just in case you didn't realise.) A normal shutdown records the state of the computer at shutdown ready for the next start up.

@CubeAce
Thanks again for those suggestions! I will try them the coming days (now busy with other urgent stuff) and I'll come back with the result, so everybody can learn something.
Have a great day!

As promised, here my (final) feedback:

I think I've found 2 causes for my problems:

> For the wrong reasons, I've renamed some *.VOB-file into *.mp4, which worked, but I suppose that was not the right way to do and has blocked MEP at a certain point
> The old graphics card driver: I've installed the latest Studio Driver 511.09 (30.0.15.1109)

and now everythings seems to work.

When I will encounter new problems I'll reinstall windows, whichs runs now for 2 1/2 years and has endured lots of installs and uninstalls, and from previous experiences I know that some dirt will always stay on your system, so that looks like a good idea as the ultimate clean action.

What I've learned also: Now I always use "MediaInfo" to check the specs of every video input I use.

Thanks for all the suggestions and stay safe!

@dirkc_be

Hi

I've renamed some *.VOB-file into *.mp4

This would not be correct. A .VOB file would be a DVD file and would be encoded in MPEG2, so should be renamed .mpg.

Also you may want to change the file names to something short that only contains alpha numeric characters as @CubeAce has mentioned in a recent post that MEP does not like filenames with other characters / symbols.

Thanks for that second tip! I didn't know that one.
