Movie Studio 18 export ... no hardware acceleration?

Justin-Timms wrote on 7/16/2021, 2:30 AM

Hi!

I just upgraded from Movie Studio v17 to v18 and I'm so confused! So much is different it doesn't feel like the same product at all - even all the shortcut keys have changed. I can just about find my way around I think but..

My main problem right now ... I cannot for the life of me get hardware accelerated H.265 export to work.

In v17 this was simple - there's an option for NVEnc right there and it's BLAZING fast:

In v18 first of all you get charged a couple of quid extra for the codec, then it doesn't appear to run with any h/w acceleration at all, it CRAWLS:

Note the message on the render window "no hardware encoding"

Now the specs say "INFUSION Engine 2 supports video acceleration for AVC and HEVC* on Intel,
NVIDIA or AMD GPUs with 1 GB VRAM or higher", so how do I get this to work?

Surely not. Where on the product web pages does it warn you about that?

Sure ... though really the question is more generic "Where is the NVEnc option in v18?" / does anyone else have H/W encoding working on NVidia card / why are the export options so different to v17?

@Justin-Timms

Thank you for that information, which confirms my thoughts as to why you are experiencing this problem.

Movie Edit Pro requires an intel CPU with built-in graphics capability for HWA. Movie Studio 18 is a rebadged version of MEP, i.e., identical in all respects (I checked this info with a member of Magix staff only yesterday). Unfortunately, your AMD CPU doesn't meet that demand.

I realise this is very much what you do NOT want to hear but that is the situation I'm afraid, sorry. 😭 (And please don't shoot the messenger! Although a moderator I am not a Magix employee, just another user!)

@emmrecs are you sure about the Hardware Acceleration? From the Specs of MMS18

"INFUSION Engine 2 supports video acceleration for AVC and HEVC on Intel, NVIDIA or AMD GPUs with 1GB VRAM or higher Example: Intel Graphics HD 630, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050, AMD Radeon RX470"

@Reyfox

Thanks for the question.

I'm honestly not sure but, as I said, speaking only yesterday to a member of Magix staff, I was definitely told that MS18 is exactly the same as MEP 2021; the requirement for the intel processor with integrated GPU has been the situation for MEP for a number of years now. I agree the quoted web statement is not wholly clear!

@emmrecs this whole thing is how not to do a software transition. This amazes me..... in the Vegas user forum people are, let's just say, not happy and about this. There is no real clarification about the differences between VMS and MMS18, and that they are not the same software.

I spotted it right away looking at the product page since I have had MEP in the past and have VPX.

Thank you @Reyfox I found it this time.

I don't recall VMS17 requiring this additional fee for HEVC?

Reyfox wrote on 7/16/2021, 7:12 AM

@ericlnz the last version of VMS I bought was VMS15, so do not recall. I'll use VP if I have editing to do and thought why have a less powerful version of Vegas.

I've just found I have a 4k HEVC file that someone posted and yes it opens in VMSP17 using the "so4" plug-in.

Hi Reyfox,

Hi All,

why have a less powerful version of Vegas.

Movie Studio 18 is not a new version of Vegas Movie Studio, it's another program.

For MS18, HEVC codec is a fee codec.

About Infusion 2, it allow just smooth project playback without need of proxy files with Intel IGP, NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, it's not a hardware encoding fonction.

Currently hardware encoding is possible with Infusion Engine 3 (Video Prox X13).

MS18 installation splash.

As you have an AMD Ryzen 7 3800X CPU and a NVidia GeForce RTX 2060, (I have an AMD Rysen 9 4900H and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 TI chipset), you can active one of these graphic devices for a smooth playback in MS18.

File -> Program Settings -> Display options.

HEVC encoding in MS18 does not work on my laptop even though I set a hardware encoding. I have the same result under MEP2021. I think only Intel CPUs with UHD 630 allow this.

Hopefully MS18 and VDL2021 can evolve to benefit from hardware encoding in H264 and H265 as in VPX13 or in VMS17.

Hi,

I was definitely told that MS18 is exactly the same as MEP 2021

I hope this is correct.

MEP 2021 Premium Manual = 386 pages.

MS18 Suite Manual = 273 pages.

To compare in details.

Regards.

Hi DéDé.

Thanks for your input, Just a couple of comments from me to specific points you make or ask about:

I was definitely told that MS18 is exactly the same as MEP 2021

It is! It was actually said to me during a telephone conversation yesterday afternoon with a member of Magix staff, in answer to a direct question, "Is MS18 the same as MEP 2021"?.

About Infusion 2, it allow just smooth project playback without need of proxy files with Intel IGP, NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, it's not a hardware encoding fonction.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean by this? You seem to imply that Hardware encoding is not available in MEP 2021 with the Infusion 2 engine. But it is! See my screenshot of a very quick mp4 export below:

(My apologies if I've misunderstood what you meant!)

My computer spec is in my signature if you'd like to see the hardware etc., I'm using.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your comments.

To my knowledge, MAGIX has never announced that the Infusion Engine 2 allows hardware encoding.

Here is what is specified by MAGIX for MEP 2021.

"... INFUSION Engine 2 The new engine that powers Movie Edit Pro 2021 now offers hardware support for graphics cards by Intel, NVIDIA and AMD. The result is a seamless project preview without the need for time-consuming rendering or creating proxy files ..."

However, I could be wrong!

As I wrote: I think only Intel CPUs with UHD 630 allow this, and in the context of the discussion: HEVC hardware encoding.

You have an Intel i7 Quad Core 6700K with HD Graphics 530 IGP. For this reason you can run a hardware encoding under MEP2021 but I think only for H264 encoding.

It work also for H265 encoding?

For users with AMD Ryzen CPU with IGP unit, H264 & H265 hardwre encoding does not work under MEP 2021 but is active and fast under VPX13 (VCE encoder), but no so fast if hardware encording is switched to GPU (mine is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 TI chipset).

During this year I verified this point on 8 differents computers in my video workshop. Intel HD530, HD 630 and UHD630 drivers is work fine for H264 but not on Ryzen.

Others ReX will be apprecied.

Adding,

What is specified by MAGIX for VPX13.

"... INFUSION Engine 3: Give your videos the ultimate boost The brand-new INFUSION Engine 3 enables you to edit even complex projects in up to 8K with super smooth playback, and it harnesses the full speed of your GPU to export your videos ..."

Hi

HEVC HW encoding of H.265 HEVC is only available in MEP2021 via the Intel iGPU on an Intel processor. A fee needs to be paid to enable H.265 encoding with either HW or Software in all recent versions of MEP.

"... INFUSION Engine 2 The new engine that powers Movie Edit Pro 2021 now offers hardware support for graphics cards by Intel, NVIDIA and AMD. The result is a seamless project preview without the need for time-consuming rendering or creating proxy files ..."

"Preview" is the only thing claimed by Magix to be accelerated with the Infusion Engine2 (by the hardware decoding) on Nvidia and AMD cards.

My understanding of Movie Studio 18 is that it is a re badged version of MEP2021 (with the added ability to open MS17 projects with cut information only ie. no effects) and has the same HWA capabilities as MEP.

Infusion Engine 3 in VPX13 has added HWA export and preview for H.265 and H.264 on systems without Intel processors and iGPUs, by utilising HW chips on the Nvidia and AMD graphics cards. Hopefully this will be included on future versions of MS and MEP!
