Ownership of Vegas Pro

Time-Tree wrote on 4/11/2026, 6:22 AM

Seems like the ownership of Vegas Pro to BorisFX was not announced ahead of time and suddenly Vegas Pro is now owned by Boris FX, However I was wondering more detail as to why the Devs moved away from Magix, since from a Customer standpoint it was perfectly fine how it was, would really like some more insight, if possible, thanks!

@Time-Tree Magix is bleeding money. They went nearly bankrupt in 2023. They needed to downsize massively and couldn't longer support multiple video and audio editing programs and sold about 3/4 of their portfolio to BorisFX.

The content creation software market changed a lot over the last decade. I assume many people now edit their projects on phones and tablets with the help of web apps like Canvas or CapCut. And young people often don't have computers anymore, so they don't grow up into using PC based audio and video editing software. So they have no incentive to buy such things.

Over the last couple of years other companies also stopped development of similar apps like Videostudio by Corel or went out of business like HitFilm by FXHome. Currently you also have a massive insolvency case in the music production business with Native Instruments.

Generally, there was a lot of growth until the late 2010s and then it began to drop off over the last 4-5 years. And now we'll see a lot of consolidation.

We will have to wait and see, how well this will go for BorisFX in the long run. Their target audience is usually professionals and they have a significant higher price tag than Magix.

I remember seeing some announcement that a new company is taking over, but any updates...etc. are still available at owners account. I have looked a few times and couldn't find any new updates in my account of Vegas Pro 23 and associated apps. However a few days ago, I couldn't log into my account and my Vegas Pro 23 shows a little window popped up saying that I need to register or activate or register immediately. I wouldn't recognize it with a statement stating that the "series # entered has been assigned to another email.

How can that be possible and how can resolve this issue.

All Vegas product queries should now be directed to BorisFX here.

@TswvFong-Lor You need to enter the e-mail address of your Magix customer account under which you registered Vegas Pro 23. It will not work with another e-mail address.

Jeff, that's only partly correct. Technical queries yes but any sales /activation queries for Vegas products sold by Magix should be directed to Magix.

My understanding is that as part of the sale agreement Russ Media undertake to keep the Magix servers in respect of Vegas products active for three years so products can be redownloaded and activated.
