Program Crashing

NH05 wrote on 1/24/2021, 3:26 PM

Hello,

I am new to Music Maker, though not to DAWs. Unfortunately, the program keeps crashing despite a brand new PC. I have never been able to add more than a vocal track and a Midi track without a crash. I save as much as possible but it crashes during most of my track takes. Please help. I am on WIndows 10 using a new a Dell Intel i5-8365U, 24GB ram, 64bitx64 and have plenty of hard drive space.

Thank you in advance for your help.

@NH05

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We need more information - computer audio card/chipset , Windows 10 version, Music Maker variant (free, Plus Premium or one of the special editions) and version number as found under Help, About - see this topic for details of what is required.

Also see this bug list if the program is Music Maker 2021 to see if you are experiencing any of the known issues.

Thank you, John. The information you seek is below:

Computer audio card/chipset: Intel Chipset SATA/PCle Premium Controller

Windows 10 version 2004 (OS Build 19041.329)

Music Maker Premium 2021, V.29.0.5.29

@NH05

Hi

Thanks for the info, however

. . . . Intel Chipset SATA/PCle Premium Controller . . . .

Unfortunately this not an audio chipset or device, it is the hard drive controllers.

The most popular is Realtek HDA, other internal devices are by Intel, Creative (Soundblaster), Nvidia or external devices such as Behringer, Focusrite etc - we need to know the one the speakers are plugged into.

We also need the details of what you were doing when the program crashed.

Thanks again for the quick response. The audio chipset is Realtek HDA. A few things cause it to crash. It will sometimes crash after recording an audio track using a Blue Yeti microphone, but typically it happens after adding a midi track on top of a vocal track or vice versa. It has also happened while using the audio FX rack track.

@NH05

Hi

Thanks for that.

Check you audio settings are like these - I have not had a crash (yet!) using this combination of settings when mixing MIDI Instruments, audio recordings and loops.

The mic setting in your Advanced settings may be slightly different - if you do not have all the Realtek inputs/output which are available on your mother board, you may be running with the Windows drivers for the Realtek which are limited. If that is the case try re-installing the audio drivers from your motherboard manufacturers.

Thanks, John. I will give that a shot and see if I have any luck. Part of the issue is that I am using my USB-based Blue Yeti Mic for Audio input and headphones. Will it still work if I change the mic input?

johnebaker wrote on 1/30/2021, 8:49 AM

@NH05

Hi

I do not have a USB mic, however in the Windows sound settings it should appear as a recording device, in Music Maker Advanced settings as shown in the image I posted the Yeti may be a selectable option.

There are many users, eg @browj2 and /or @emmrecs, here who may be able to help more with USB microphones.

Sorry, I'm not going to be of any help with your USB mic. I've never used one and every instinct tells me to avoid them like the plague!

Fundamentally, for serious audio work they can be excellent when they work but they seem to be rather prone to errors caused, it appears, by the OS and, should you ever find you need to use more than one at the same time, well, you might as well forget it, unless you're prepared to jump through an awful lot of hoops!

Do you suggest using a mic through an audio interface instead?

NH05 wrote on 1/30/2021, 10:21 AM

And thank you both.

@NH05

Do you suggest using a mic through an audio interface instead?

Speaking entirely personally, most definitely Yes! A mic whose cable has an XLR plug (and therefore an audio interface with at least one XLR socket) is likely to be much easier to properly set up and use.
