Program freezes

Barry-Worrell wrote on 12/21/2019, 6:07 AM

I have Xara Web Designer Premium 15.1.0.53605. The program has an issue that happens every time I launch the program. After the program is up it freezes, after you click the Text Tool. If I don't click on the text tool, I can do other functions without freezing. But eventually you have to use the text tool and then it freezes. In it's frozen state, no other function can be used, even getting out of the program cannot be done by clicking the exit "X" in the upper right hand corner. If I wait about a minuet or so, it will start and function properly. I'm using Windows 10 and I keep up to date on all updates.

I've just had this start happening to me as well. Have you found a solution??

Barry-Worrell wrote on 7/20/2021, 11:26 AM

Sorry to say I haven't. I've been using different versions of Web Designer over the years, but stopped updating to the newer version a couple of years ago since version 15 still covers all the functions I use to maintain the site I have now. I saw no reason to update. I'm curious to know if, while your program boots up, do you get the little window letting you know that all service help from Xara ceased on a certain date?? I suspicion not updating to later versions might have something to do with it. Also, it has a little box that if you check it, you would not get that message again. However I still do. If you find out something else, let me know.

@Barry-Worrell

Hi and welcome to the forum.

. . . . do you get the little window letting you know that all service help from Xara ceased on a certain date? . . . .

This should be either:

  1. the Update Notifier telling you your Update Service has expired and that the Online Catalogue is no longer available to you this can be ignored if you do not want to add any new features to your website.

  2. the program is dropping out of support in this case raising a support ticket for an issue would not be free.

  3. a popup saying you can upgrade to version 18, you can ignore this as well.

We need more information - computer specification and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full.

Are the computer's graphics drivers up to date?

What changed on the computer just before this started - eg Windows update/upgrade, new antivirus software, etc?

@Tami-Cernetic

Hi

I have posted the same comment in your topic - as you have posted here as well, I will closed your own post to avoid splitting answers?

Thanks, I use a Surface Pro 7 (Windows 10, 64 bit). I am still up to date with my service, can't think of any updates other than the usual Window's updates. I have the latest Xara Photo and Graphic Designer.

It looks as if you missed the real problem. You should read my original post on this thread that was posted on 12/21/2019. To reiterate:

The "little window" I spoke of was a secondary thought that I had in my conversation with Tami-Cernetic, and I'm not that concerned with it. I can click the box to proceed in the program. I'm more concerned with the "freezing of the program.

Now to give you some of the info you requested:

I have Xara Web Designer Premium 15.1.0.53605  DL x64 May  4 2018

My Pc is Windows 10 home. Intel Core i5 650 @ 3.20GHz All drivers are up to date. My antivirus is Avast Premium.

@Tami-Cernetic

Hi Tami

Thanks for the name of your computer, however the specification is incomplete - there are 10 variants of the Surface Pro 7. Please read the post I linked to for the details of what is required, also which Antivirus program are you using?

@Barry-Worrell

Hi Barry

I understood your posts and secondary 'issue' - commented on this first and as you say it does not stop the program working.

Thanks for the computer specification, however it is incomplete, how much RAM is in the system, and is there a graphics card installed, if so what make/model/version?

I should have mentioned that I too have Web Designer Premium 15 and have no issues with the text tool.

@Barry-Worrell

Hi

Thanks for the extra information.

I suspect there are 2 possible causes of this issue:

  1. Avast real time scanning is slowing down your computer - try stopping the File, Behaviour and Ransomware Shields for 10 minutes and test the Text tool.

    If this works add Web Designer to the exceptions list in Avast.

  2. The Windows security update KB5004237 - Flash removal and Printer bug fix - has caused an issue, try uninstalling the update.

I would avoid re-installing if you have downloaded and installed all the Online Gallery content - you may lose this as your Update Service has expired.

I've added Web Designer 15 to the exception list on Avast using this path - C:\Program Files (x86)\Xara\Xara Web Designer, using both upper and lower case, however no results. Also, I checked the files that are located in the Avast Ransomware listing, and there is nothing there pretraining to Xara. Should I stop the the Ransomware feature to Avast? And how is that done?

Since uninstalling flash removal and printer bug fix, is a little deeper than I care to go, at this stage, I think I'll surrender to the problem and continue to do what I have for the past few years, and that's just wait until it un-freezes. The problem is a bit aggravating, but not serious.

Please see that the other poster, Tami-Cernetic, sees what has been said on my part. Your suggestions might benefit them.

This comment puts a different light on the issue - did you have the program running 'normally' on Windows 7 or 8 and upgrade to Windows 10?

Here are my system details:

Tami-Cernetic wrote on 8/31/2021, 8:57 AM

I don't have Avast, but I do have the system update mentioned above and it seems my issue started right around when that update installed. So, does Xara somehow depend on flash and the removal messed it up somehow with Windows?? What are the dangers of removing that update?

Tami-Cernetic wrote on 12/10/2021, 4:02 PM

Same issue regardless I think I'm going to ask for a refund or a free upgrade. This is so silly that there is no fix for this. It continues to bog down every time I start to mess with Type. It's a pain. Please don't make me turn to AI!
