save error

I have Movie Edit Pro Premium...purchased 6 months ago...running on PC Windows 10, and have successfully edited and produced over a dozen movies. On my latest, after saving several edits of a medium-sized production, I suddenly get "an error occurred while writing the project file" and cannot save. I tried the "Manage Movies, Export" with a new name, without success. I even loaded a previously completed movie and get the same message. Is it possible the program is corrupted?

Hi

Please read this topic and then comeback your computer specification - details required are in the topic.

In addition how much free space is there on the drive where the project is being saved?

Hi

. . . . Windows 10 OS, version 1809 . . . .

When did you upgrade to this version?

. . . . Free space on the drive being used is 57.3 GB . . . .

Is this as viewed in Windows Explorer ?

If so the you have approx 10% free disk space, this along with having 8GB of RAM may not be enough when the program is running and you have a loaded project.

1) I have not upgraded since I changed from Windows 7 to Windows 10 less than two years ago. I do, however, accept updates when prompted

2) the 57.3 GB is what shows when I access "My Computer", not via Windows Explorer.

3) Not sure how to tell if the problem is inadequate disk space, but I will run CCCleaner to free up some space and try again.

I appreciate your efforts to help!.

Hi

. . . . not upgraded since I changed from Windows 7 to Windows 10 less than two years ago . . .

Depending on exactly how long ago you should have had several Windows 10 upgrades, possibly from version 1703, when you upgraded from Windows 7, through versions 1709, 1803 and now 1809.

You can check when 1809 was installed by opening Settings (cog icon in the Windows menu), Update & Security, View Update History.

It may be this that is causing the issue.

. . . . "My Computer", not via Windows Explorer. . . . .

Clicking My Computer opens Windows Explorer.

. . . . I will run CCCleaner to free up some space . . . .

Is the computer a laptop with a single SSD drive with Windows, Programs and the video used in the projects on it?

I don't know if this will free up enough space, ideally you should have at least 25% free space, to allow for files the Windows creates on the hard each time it runs and free workspace for the program (via Windows).

A quality update was installed on 2/13/19, and this current project is the first I've edited since then--but I've made a dozen or so successful edits since then. It doesn't indicate when Version 1809 was installed, so I assume this is the original version.

The install will appear under Feature Updates, this is mine below when I upgraded to 1803.

The version number indicates the year and month the upgrade was released. 1809 was supposed to be released Sept 2018, however it was delayed to Oct then withdrawn due to issues, being re-released mid Nov 2018.

As you upgrade approx 2 years ago then you would have had version 1703 or 1709 depending on when you upgraded.

How many drives are installed and what type and size?

How would the upgrade to 1809 be the cause? I can uninstal the upgrade, of course, if needed.

Hi

. . . . How would the upgrade to 1809 be the cause? . . . .

Any issues caused by the update are, as yet, a mystery to me - I am holding off the 1809 upgrade for a while, so cannot see what changes it has made.

The upgrade from Windows 8.1 (1703) and the subsequent 1803 update caused several issues with Movie Edit Pro for me and several other users requiring a re-install.

I would suggest you try re-installing the software first using this procedure before rolling back the update.

Does Win10 have a resource monitor similar to Win7 John?

If so Ron may be able to see real-time the performance of his PC.

Personally, I don't think Ron has enough drive space. Ram is close to the bone as well although MEP doesn't use that much. Even just typing on this forum running my browser, my PC is using 2553MB of memory with 2718MB on standby.

CubeAce wrote on 2/22/2019, 4:49 PM

@Ron-2019_.

You could try recording your PCs performance and see where it is tripping up.

I'm using an aged i5 processor as well but not using the inbuilt graphics. I'm only using up less than half of my C:/ hard drive space which is around 450 gig, but it's two solid state hard drives striped into an array (Both 500gig). I've also got 16gig of ram installed although I've never been able to get MEP in use to push the amount of ram being used past about 4.3gig.

To record to, I'm using fast internal WD SATA drives with large inboard caches and have around 8TB of internal HD storage, not including external backup disks. Sometimes the page file system on the main drive can be moving a lot of data constantly around during video editing, hence Johns concern about the amount of free hard drive space. It's also not a great idea to use the main drive to record to or read a project from as the data thruput across the main board's northbridge can be too much for the motherboard to handle when communicating to the CPU. I get nervous and do clearouts of my C:/ drive when it gets half full. Also never be tempted to compress the C:/ drives' data files to save space as it then loads the CPU even further.

The other thing to check within MEP is that you have all the 'Enable Smooth Playback' options ticked which helps reduce the CPU load. At a pinch, and if it works, you can leave the 'Deactivate Effects' unticked.

I uninstalled all programs & folders, including hidden files, and got no error messages. I tried to re-install the software, but soon got a series of 1603 errors: "could not access Network Location WIX_DIR_COMMON_DOCU" for several files, and thus the installation aborted. When I tried to automatically send the results to MAGIX it would not send because it could not find an internet connection, even though there were no connection problems.

So now I am without a program entirely! I had no problems with my original installation in November. I'm pretty sure the problem is the upgrade on Feb. 9.

Hi

. . . . 1603 errors: "could not access Network Location WIX_DIR_COMMON_DOCU" for several files . . . .

Damn . . . . this error message suggests that the 1809 update has probably corrupted your user documents location(s) in the Registry which would account for your original issue.

As a check restart the computer - Windows button, Power option, Restart to ensure that all drivers etc are reloaded - simple power off and power on will not do this.

If that fails then download and run the Microsoft fixit here to fix registry issues, then try re-installing again.

If all fails then roll back the 1809 update if roll back is still available.

What is your computer skills level? If all the above fail there is another method, however it involves editing the Registry.

Sorry, didn't know it by the term "power option". I did this with no luck. I also ran the MS fixit with no luck--the program was not listed, so I clicked the "Not listed" option, and no registry problems were detected.

I can still uninstall the update, I think. The 2/9 update listed is the Security Update KB4470788. If this is correct, I will uninstall it. (There is a similar security update on 2/13 with a different number.)

Hi,

My 1809 update was done in late Jan, as I set my updates delayed for 3 months. So far I have not seen any issues with it (yet... touch wood!!), saving projects for me works fine. This seems to be the 1st complain related (?) to Win10 update on this forum, unlike the previous Win10 update.

Casual home video editing just for FUN since MEP 5.5.4.1 (2006??)

  • MEP 17.0.3.177 & unused Vegas Pro 15
  • Win10 2004 i7-4770 3.4GHz, 32GB, 512GB Nvme, 4TB HDD, Nvidia GTX1070 (26.21.14.3160) & an old DVD writer
  • Amateur video equipment: Sony HDR-CX675, JVC GZ-MG330

Greetings, all:

I am back after a week's absence, and have resolved the problem, thanks to MAGIX's support manager, personnel name removed by moderator since should not be published. For all who may have similar problems, here is the solution: The "controlled folder access" in Defender's ransomware protection, which was turned on, prevented installation. I turned it "off" and the installation successfully completed. I immediately turned it back on, with no adverse effects on Movie Edit's "save" function. Thanks for everyone's efforts!
