Trial Version - Missing Codec

Arthur-Rasmussen wrote on 1/17/2022, 10:46 PM

How can you test a program when it doesn't even include the basic MPG-2 codec. I have no problems with limiting the output but it should also be stated that the trial version doesn't have some of the basic codecs. Also, I don't remember seeing anything stating that it was also going to install Opera. I will find another program that provides better information on their trial versions so that you can really test it.

@Arthur-Rasmussen

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums, so not a contact for any Magix staff.

Codecs have to be paid for/licenced by the software manufacturer so are often not made available in Trial versions. However, I confess to being a little surprised that the MPEG-2 one is not available to you, albeit the length of the allowed export is likely to be rather short. Are you testing the export of a video file longer than, I think, about two minutes? If so, that is the reason that you cannot.

As to the matter of Opera being installed, this is clearly shown to be a user-selectable option if you read carefully through each screen that is shown before the actual installation begins.

Finally, are you aware that Magix offers a money-back guarantee if you do purchase the software but then decide that it is really not what you want? I believe you have 30 days from the date of purchase to indicate that you want a refund.

@Arthur-Rasmussen does have a point; with all the "stuff' that is flashed up at you as the lengthy install process runs, one could be forgiven for missing the Opera Install option (which should be an opt-in, not, I suspect, an opt-out). Of course, one has to ask why on earth a huge company like Magix is needs to foist upon unsuspecting newbys a browser that is free! Perhaps they get a royalty from Opera. Magix could use that to provide the normal codecs for the trial versions. Oh wait...

(Tongue in cheek) rant over! 😀😂

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Al.

I agree with you!

It is "highly regrettable" that these optional add-ons do seem to require a positive user opt-out rather than an opt-in.

As to the OP's original question, and we await any response he makes, I suspect he may have been hoping to export a longer file than the Trial version allows.

Where are you seeing this option to install Opera?

Did you purchase direct from Magix or elsewhere?

I have just re-installed 2 different programs one being Movie Edit Pro 2022, downloaded direct from Magix and there is no option for Opera to be installed, in either of the Download Manager nor in the actual program installers.

I don't remember seeing it recently but i do know it's an option box to un-tick, I've learnt to look out for that stuff that gets installed by not looking properly, so maybe i just un-tick without thinking now, as Emmerics says it's there when installing, you just have to read each install dialogue.

I'm pretty sure MPEG-2 is always there tho. MPEG-4 is the one you have to buy, or maybe it's the HEVC one ,🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️😂 not the MPEG-2 👍

Is it possible that your system does not have an MPEG2 decoder available not including players like VLC etc.?

Some versions of windows 10 did not come with it included and required a download from the Microsoft store.

I downloaded the trial from the Magix website. Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium 21.01.85

I reinstalled the trial on another computer and found the Opera checkbox, It is required if you want to have the Update Notifier installed, that should be a separate option not a requirement to receive update notifications.

CubeAce wrote on 1/19/2022, 7:12 PM

@Arthur-Rasmussen

It's possible there is a licence fee due to the Moving Picture Experts Group for the use within an editing program.

Playback only programs like viewers don't pay that as the MPEG group would want the codec used as much as possible but charge a licence fee for the use in editors. In such cases codecs can be withheld in the demo versions but supplied once paid for.

Just because you have a codec on your system doesn't mean all software can use it. My understanding is that VLC for example doesn't make its codecs available to others.

Hi

The import formats that MEP uses are listed in the Program setting, Import/Export tab as shown below. As @CubeAce has commented many codecs are licenced and not availaable until the program is purchased, the exception being the HEVC (h.265) codec for export, for which a small fee applies.

So not just a "foist", blackmail. 😮

The point remains: it is ludicrous that you can't test an MPEG export from an editor that costs over $150. There are many free MPEG 2 exporters around. The trial could easily be set up to limit the export time, (or konk out after say 30 days).

@Arthur-Rasmussen

I reinstalled the trial on another computer and found the Opera checkbox, It is required if you want to have the Update Notifier installed, that should be a separate option not a requirement to receive update notifications.

I fully agree about those update notifications.

But I don't have Opera installed but still receive those notifications so it isn't a requirement I think.
