Update 20.0.1.65

martin-brennan wrote on 9/7/2020, 5:11 AM

I am really beyond it with Magix. I keep saying time to ditch their software, but after 15 years it's difficult to "start again". I think they know this. shoddy company support, the removal of the support phone line etc etc. and now this:

against my better judgment i paid for the update a couple of months ago. 19.0.2.58 was working okay, but now today i get this "update to 20.0.1.65" message.

before we go on, Hardware = 32gb i5-3570k, 64bit win10, Nvidia GTX970 4gb. wired 100mb broadband working at full speed.

note: magix is the only software that EVER has problems updating on this machine. all too frequently. but this last one is the icing on the foul-tasting cake.

♦ 1st attempt: ♦ download software > the program will now be closed for installation > it doesn't after 25 minutes - still no change,...still the circling update > task manager > end task

♦ 2nd attempt ♦ download software > the program will now be closed for installation > it doesn't after 25 minutes - still no change,...still the circling update > task manager > end task

♦ 3rd attempt ♦ select option update later, program loads but will not let me save a simple 2min file - "no hardware" error msg.

♦ 4th attempt ♦ download software > the program will now be closed for installation > it doesn't after 25 minutes - still no change,...still the circling update > task manager > end task

what am i supposed to do now? other than finally accept Magix are an unhelpful company, with no customer concern and software that hijacks your system and refuses to let you just do what it's designed to do?

after 2 hrs, finally got this to update - have no idea how. by clicking cancel it presented the opportunity to close MEP and the update finally installed???

more confusing now - MEP has decided to treat a very simple 25fps 2 min clip as 50fps! and (worse still) then takes 7 minutes to render it as mp4!

i wish Magix woulds refrain from this kind of updating...do they not have beta testing or similar? instead of forcing the customers into being involuntary system testers?

Hi Martin.

How are you exporting your projects?

You should be able to see and adjust all parameters of an export before it begins.

What are the movie settings on importing the project?

I don't think any company has the resources to check a program against all component variables in a given system and systems are constantly changing. Maybe not from user to user, but across the board in general.

It may be your anti-virus/firewall program that is causing problems. Several users have reported download and installation problems. I am not one of them.

I have two vastly different computers; desktop is quite old. Each has a different anti-virus program. I was able to download the downloader, run it which gets the installer program, on both computers without any problems, whatsoever. Also, I got all of the extra content without problems. Thus, I suggest that the problems are with your computer, not the program.

Similarly, I upgraded to VPX12 on my old desktop and updated to the latest patch, again without incident.

The only problem that I had was with my screen capture program, the first time, on my desktop. No problem with my notebook (Surface Pro 4).

For MEP, I uninstalled it twice from my desktop and reinstalled it using the already downloaded exe files, again, without incident. The extra content is now located on a drive different from C.

The startup dialog has been changed and is much better. I suggest that you look at it the next time that you open MEP. You can modify the type: I have HDTV - open the popdown - the other 2 parameters adjust depending on the selection of the type; frame rate, and size - HVDV1, 2 or FullHD" Make sure that you have the frame rate correct.

Hi

. . . . Hardware = 32gb i5-3570k, 64bit win10, Nvidia GTX970 4gb . . . . MEP has decided to treat a very simple 25fps 2 min clip as 50fps! and (worse still) then takes 7 minutes to render it as mp4 . . . .

Given the specification of your computer falls below the minimum requirements of MEP 2021 and all video encoding is done using the CPU (software encoding) you can expect extended rendering times.

The i5-3570K processor does not have the required minimum integrated GPU to be able to perform Hardware Acceleration (HWA), nor does MEP 2021/2020/2019 support using the GTX 970 for export, this and the need for a minimum of a 4th generation processor has been mentioned in your previous topic on rendering times.

. . . . as 50fps! . . . .

What does a MediaInfo analysis of the source video clip say - post the results from the Text view within MediaInfo.

. . . . i wish Magix woulds refrain from this kind of updating...do they not have beta testing or similar? instead of forcing the customers into being involuntary system testers? . . . .

You had the option to update or not and chose to update - did you check that your computer system was up to the minimum specification required?

I just wish Magix wouldn't cr*p about with stuff. if it's working why break it?
before this update, my rendering for (uncomplex) clips was appsox 2 minutes render time per 2 minutes of actual footage. now render time has more than tripled.

@browj2 - i know what you're getting at, but Magix was working okay before this update...and previous updates have installed without having to jump through hoops. i haven't hcanged any other apps/settings or firewall/virus checker settings in the interim. this is definitely Magix fault.

johnebaker@ sorry, you're blaming me for updating?

Magix know exactly what my hardware is - they have ALL of those details on my acct. why target me with updates that i can't use?

also, when the update process fires up, why doesn't it do a hardware check and warn the user that hardware is out of date.

finally, i would not say that a 32gb i5-3570k, 64bit win10, Nvidia GTX970 4gb is out of date. it should be more than capable. but Magix have been very good at this kind of stuff down the years - taking your money but providing little/no support. why is it down to other knowledgable users like yourself to inform us things won't work as advertised?

bottom line? Magix are selling a product - they should make it explicitly clear what the system requirements are. and inform you if your system isn't up to it.

Also, what's so advanced about this app that it requires greater hardware than an i5 with 32gb of ram? bizarre. i've got some much more advanced stuff running on my system and i'm well above the minimum requirements for those.

martin-brennan wrote on 9/7/2020, 9:35 AM

just found this on Magix site (tucked away)

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Processor: 2.4 GHz RAM: 4 GB or higher Graphics card: Onboard, min. resolution 1280 x 1024, 512 MB VRAM and DirectX 11 support (recommended: Intel Graphics HD 520 or better for MPEG2/AVC/HEVC) INFUSION Engine 2 supports video acceleration for AVC and HEVC on Intel, NVIDIA or AMD GPUs with 1GB VRAM or higher Example: Intel Graphics HD 630, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050, AMD Radeon RX470

my system and GPU are all better than that - by some way!

i've 8x the required ram, 150% more CPu speed, and 150% more GPU power, with 400% GPU ram requirements.

Hi

. . . . you're blaming me for updating? . . . .

No - I said you had the option and had chosen.

. . . . Magix know exactly what my hardware is - they have ALL of those details on my acct. why target me with updates that i can't use? . . . .

Unfortunately that is not the reality with advertising - you are bombarded with it day in day out on TV, out shopping etc. you either act on it or ignore it.

. . . . when the update process fires up, why doesn't it do a hardware check and warn the user that hardware is out of date. . . . .

AFAIK no PC software does that.

. . . . i would not say that a 32gb i5-3570k, 64bit win10, Nvidia GTX970 4gb is out of date. it should be more than capable. . . . .

It probably would be if we were still using camera technology from 8 years ago 1920 x 1080 was just catching on and the new resolution to take off now is 8K. Technology has moved on very rapidly since the i5-3750K was released.

. . . . why is it down to other knowledgable users like yourself to inform us things won't work as advertised . . . .

As with any video editing software to be able to process the video from the latest cameras the hardware has have have enough power to be able to do this, hence the need for a minimum system requirement - by analogy it is like buying a car without checking its dimensions only to find it will not fit in the garage - I speak from experience here.

. . . . bottom line? Magix are selling a product - they should make it explicitly clear what the system requirements are . . .

They do it part of the Specifications here .

. . . . what's so advanced about this app that it requires greater hardware than an i5 with 32gb of ram? bizarre . . . .

Handling 8K video, the amount of pixels making up the image in an 8K video is approx 16x that of Full HD 1920 x 1080 ie approx 33.2 million vs 2 million, and needs faster and more powerful computers to handle the amount of data per frame of video.

@johnebaker you keep referring to 8k video. i'm not using 8k. i'm using 1920x1080. so therefore, my system - according to Magix own requirements - is more than capable. Either MEP works well with the systems they claim it should, or they mislead - one or the other only. One other thing, they've made it quite clear for some time, that this upgrade would speed up render times - they've never said "you need xxx to be able to benefit from this". they claimed these last two upgrades would speed up processing/rendering significantly - it hasn't, it's much worse. this is a 2 minute, 1920x1080 video clip with no effects or tweaks.

Magix ARE responsible for making clear the minimum and recommended spec required to use their software with specific video resolutions. it can't be that difficult to inform the buyer?

people see a min/rec spec and make purchases based on this. if it doesn't work with the machines they claim it does, then they should stop making these claims.

@martin-brennan

Hi Martin.

It really doesn't matter if you use 8K or not. The program is now set to handle 8K HDR video.

Your Intel GPU using Intel® HD Graphics 4000 is actually older than MEP has asked for for some time requiring Intel® HD Graphics 520 (which is newer) or above. The Nvidia GTX970 4gb only just handles 4K or as far as I know, HDR video, and has different architecture to newer cards.

While MEP 2021 will run on your machine (It does come under the Basic requirements section and in some parts exceeds it such as amount of ram) you will not gain any hardware acceleration and basically all encoding will be done on the CPU.

So the bottom line is it does improve speeds for some but not but not all. All manufactures will only give you the good news and bury the bad.

In this instance you get two clues. First basic requirements normally means you have to exceed them for best benefit. Second is the recommended graphics processors needed with examples.

I do agree with you that in an ideal world it should be spelled out more clearly. Unfortunately that is rarely the case and Magix are not alone. Particularly in this instance where it appears to be an upgrade to a new version of MEP rather than an update fixing bugs. But again this was from MEP 2020 to 2021 so a sort of a clue things could be different in this release.

The End User Licence Agreement in all fairness (or not) to them does include this clause.

8. Guarantee and liability

8.1 You are aware that state of the art Software programs and associated documentation may contain errors, and that it is not possible to develop data processing programs in such a way that they are error-free for all application conditions and all customer requirements, or error-free in conjunction with all third-party programs and hardware. MAGIX provides no assurances of particular features and usability related to planned customer-specific applications.

CubeAce wrote on 9/7/2020, 1:42 PM

@martin-brennan

Hi Martin.

You could go to your Magix account and go to the download page and download it from there.

In theory this should put back the version you bought originally so be careful. If it was before MEP 2020 you may get that version that will keep updating until you get to the one you need but be warned you will only get the third party effects that were offered with the program at the time of purchase providing they were not time limited offers in which case you may lose those.

Alternatively if you opted to download and keep a copy of MEP 2020 it should be on your PC somewhere. That at least should have everything. Mine is called Video_deluxe_2020_Premium_DLV_INT (with an added serial number) and is in Local Disk (C:) / Users / Ray / Documents / MAGIX Downloads / Installationsmanager.

In both cases you may get a 'Newer version detected' and aborting happen. If so you will have to uninstall first. Either way, all the content will have to be reloaded.

If you mean roll back like you could with Win 7 then it's doubtful. I haven't found a way to do that but wait and see if anyone else knows how.

people see a min/rec spec and make purchases based on this. if it doesn't work with the machines they claim it does, then they should stop making these claims.

I feel your pain... that's why I have stopped paying the subscription since last year but they still bother me by asking me to subscript again.

I feel your pain #2... the nagging to update and subscript again and again until you submit to do it. Refrain as long as possible until you have lots of time for troubleshooting like during lock down.

I feel you pain #3.... yeah they been taking my money for things that are freely available and then blocking it.... like able to edit using MP4/MOV video.

I feel you pain #4.... and yes, they should mention correctly the minimum specs... Like must require to have an Intel new iCore CPU for hardware acceleration but totally fail to mention it. Sure marketing needs to be as general and covers as many system otherwise they will position themselves out of a specific market (like all AMD users).

is there a way to permanently disable the updated? every time i cancel it in task manager, MEP appears to allow me to access the program, but then 1 minute later i get

Error: videodeluxe.exe access violation

the updater program is killing me. i already have a program that i'm annoyed with. last thing i need is any more updates making things worse. i think there may also be a bridge32 program that requires the same nobbling.

is this possible?

thanks

@martin-brennan

Hi

. . . . so how do i cripple it permanently . . . .

Uninstall it.

Do note that the installer dialogs have an option for not installing extra programs eg Update Notifier or Simpliclean if offered.

hi, any chance on guidance on where/how to uninstall these two progs?

neither show in control panel add/remove

martin-brennan wrote on 9/17/2020, 10:53 AM

hi all, finally managed to completely remove the latest update of MEP.

and have now installed 18.0.2.25.

there are a couple of major bugbears:

♦ reminders to "renew the update service" are stalling the program and i'm unable to use the app. is there a way to permanently disable this reminder? - if so, how?

♦ two programs: Service_rel_u_x64_vc12.exe (updater service) and Bridge32_v103.exe appear to be the culprits. how to i shut these two down completely and still use MEP?

any help at all is appreciated. i just want my app back the way it used to be.

thanks

well, over a month later (almost 2) and no matter what I do, these two programs keep returning, and EVERY time i run MEP, the program is unusable...they grind everything to a halt...CPU and GPU fans go mental and, despite ticking the "don;t tell me about updates" box...it unticks itself on next boot and starts the whole reminder/checking for updates process all over....vicious cycle of events here.

Version: 18.0.2.25.

screenshot shows the two programs, but I'm unable to cripple them.

Hi

. . . . two programs: Service_rel_u_x64_vc12.exe (updater service) and Bridge32_v103.exe appear to be the culprits. how to i shut these two down completely and still use MEP? . . .

You don't, the updater service is what checks for updates to the program, not to be confused with the Update Notifier which generates news popups and is also for Cloud Import.

The Bridge service is to enable compatibility with 32 bit VST's, without it you could only use 64 bit VST's and has nothing to do with connecting to the Internet.

I have found that ending the Service_rel_u_x64_vc12.exe in Task Manager does allow the program to continue start correctly, however it is not a long term solution.

I have found the main hanging issue appears to have one of 3 possible causes:

  1. The program ini file has become corrupted and the Updater is trying to communicate with a non-existent server address - try resetting the program back to its default settings,
File, Setting, Reset .... - you will also have to set the Extra content install dialog options as shown below when the pop up appears

  2. Firefox is running and preventing access to the network communications.

  3. A known bug in Windows 10 causes the Internet to appear to be unavailable, the actual bug, in theory, relates to the task bar network icon being displayed incorrectly. However it may indirectly affect the update service.
