I was pleased to be able to purchase a copy of Video Pro X and was hoping it would be an alternative to the aging Lightworks software I have been using for some time. But within a minute or so of opening it, the software ground to a halt and would not respond. It seemed to be trying to download my entire Dropbox.
Where am I going wrong?

Can we start with your complete system spec, which version of VPX you have ,and did you install all VPX content before it ground to a halt?
Without that it's like telling a mechanic your car won't go. Not a lot of help as it could be anything. We need info to go on as a starting point.

I have a Dell G3 15 gaming laptop with Windows 10 Home, with Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10300H CPU @ 2.50GHz, 8GB memory and a 512GB SSD.
When I click Help-ABout the VPX software gives me a version of v.17.0.3.68 - is that the right place to look?
And yes, I had a tricky time downloading all the content and installing it. It kept stopping and starting the download of various parts.

Download speeds seem to vary a lot depending on connection speeds and where you are located. It's not uncommon for some sets of files to be really slow downloading.
I think your laptop is this one minus the nvidia graphics card.
In theory it should be coping but may be running out of space on the C: drive.
How much spare capacity does the C: drive have and what other drives are connected to your laptop?
Did you look at the required system specs before downloading?
Did VPX load OK before opening a project?

AFAICS all the G3 15 series either have a GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1660 Ti or RTX 2060 graphics cards

The video card is an Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti and I have even now only used 171GB of my 512GB SSD drive. In the Dell system app it says my PC is a G3 3500. Do I need a better spec than this to run VPX?

No, it should cope but maybe you need to have additional drives. If everything is on the one drive, the program, the source files, and the project destination, it could all be too much causing bottlenecks.
The other thing to check is because you have the nvidia card that the Intel GPU hasn't been disabled in the bios.
One way to check would be to look at the VPX setup and check both GPUs are showing up.
Inside the VPX program go to Settings / Program ? Display Options and it should look something like this.
If it doesn't, the bios may need to be changed to enable the Intel GPU as well. That would be pc / laptop specific and need additional help from Dell or maybe another member here can help on that point as that would be beyond my experience.
Also while in settings, make sure you are using the Wave driver for sound in the Playback section of Program Settings.

It has the NVidia Card in both settings and the intel GPU is not available in the dropdown menu for video output.
I do have the Wave driver set for sound in the Playback settings.
Maybe I shouldn't be using Dropbox for storing the various sound and video clips?

As @CubeAce (Ray) wrote above, it seems it is disabled in your computer's BIOS; it needs to be enabled.
Personally, I would never consider using Dropbox, or other "remote" storage for "live" editing. In another forum i visit a very experienced user of audio software likens depending upon a connection to any remote server to deliver a continuous data stream as "depending on a piece of wet string". That might be something of an exaggeration but the meaning is clear, I think!
Ray also comments on your possible need for additional drives; I would fully concur with this. One single drive, however "fast" it may be, is really not enough for serious video editing. Having one, or more, would also mean you are not dependent on Dropbox!

I have to concur with everything Jeff has just said. Both not using Dropbox and using at least one or more (preferably two, but at least one fast additional hard drive) as well as trying to activate the Intel GPU would probably cure all of your current problems. Unfortunately in this instance I would place them equally important things to try to implement.

The idea of using two additional hard drives is to have the source files and projects on one and to place exports onto the other for more efficient use of the drive speeds and free up the C: drive to run the program.
One will do for now though although sorting files and folders may get messy.

I looked and drilled right down to the customisation of features - AFAICS there is no option to not have a Nvidia GPU.

I now can't find anything with an i5 9th generation Intel CPU. They are now either all 11th or 10th gen CPUs.
I have to concede I can't prove anything 😞

I would reiterate what the others have said - trying to run a Video editor from source files in the cloud is an absolute NO NO!
Create a new folder on your hard drive and download the video clips you intend to use in the project, start a new project and import the clips from the folder on your hard drive. Even if you only have a single SSD it should handle most basic projects on its own.
On the other hand if you can not even open any project new or old without the program stopping responding because of this apparent attempt to download all your files video files that you mentioned in your first post, then it could be related to this problem: - https://www.magix.info/us/forum/excessive-disc-reading-on-opening-vpx--1214496/ - whether it be a virus scanner or just VPX trying to read in your files relating to a previous session.
Your options then might be to disconnect your PC from the internet or stop the Win Defender process mentioned in the linked thread.

Yes I found out yesterday from a Microsoft support tech who installed it on my Surface Pro 3 in the hopes it would cure what I always told them must be a hardware fault. It didn't!
I don't have it on my workstation yet. Do you?

Thanks for all these suggestions, guys. Really appreciated! I think streamlining storage of source and exported files is a crucial issue that I had never thought about before - but with the amount of both building up considerably now, it's time to do something. Will also follow up the GPU issue too and let you know.

Yes. No real problems with it yet except the usual return to default settings in the sound section such, as audio mix being turned off yet again and resetting audio bit depths and sample rates on all inputs and outputs, and vst based plug-ins losing their connection pathways in older programs. (at least in the audio projects I've re-opened so far)
It may be my imagination but MEP and VPX seem to be running more smoothly under load. VPX seems to be loading projects and files faster. But then I've had more than a few updates over the past week including drivers so difficult to pin down what is making real differences.
All updates are in my signature.

While it may fix plenty of bugs, it is not advisable to force updating to 20H2 manually.
Forcing an update can result in bugs appearing the update on the PC, it is best to wait for the update to be offered to the PC via Windows Update, they are on a scheduled roll out and when it is offered depends partly on the hardware in the PC and if bugs appear from early users on the early update cycle.
My PC tends to be on about a 3 month wait after release before it gets these big Windows updates, my laptop is even longer.

I didn't, I noticed my mouse movements slow down for no noticeable reason last week while web browsing and found a notification come up that it was ready for download. I've read about forced updating in the past and the risks associated with updating Windows on systems that can't support the updates.
If you are suggesting I'm suggesting a forced update I'm not. Sorry if it appeared that way. The only other thing that is notable is what has happened to the Windows side bar. Some of the individual program icons have been replaced by folder icons until opened.
The desktop has remained unchanged.

Added: just found out my computer has failed to install 20H2 - odd thing no warnings it had failed! Another thing to fix!!!

No worries and good advice at any time.
We are currently going through a really strange phase of new components coming out for people either upgrading systems, building completely new systems,or buying a new one. I can see the problems such choices can make when considering the uses an individual may want to incorporate and how it will effect the performance of such programs. I think we are also going to see more and more complaints relating to performance from people with older systems let alone new ones configured for different uses.
