videos will only play audio in upgraded MEP

Marta123 wrote on 11/21/2020, 10:41 AM

I had an old version of MEP that would not play audio of my gopro videos and after googling found that I should upgrade to the 2021 version so I did. The new version downloaded some kind of codac? converter and now all of my videos ONLY play the AUDIO and no video. I am not technical savvy at all and do not understand many modern computer terms. I just want to be able to take a video, including my new gopro videos and insert them into my movie. I need very basic instructions on how to fix the codac issue. ( I still have the other MEP version on my computer that will play my other videos but the gopro videos have the static on them in the old MEP version.) I have tried googling this issue and don't have luck.

Hi Marta and welcome to the Movie Edit Pro user user to user forum.

The files from a Go-Pro can be unusual in the way they are encoded and not always easily used within a normal video editor. (Movie Edit Pro is not the only video editor that can not cope with all Go Pro footage).

I suggest you read up on this on the Go Pro site and look at their video player that can convert the files into a more universally acceptable format for video editing. https://community.gopro.com/t5/en/GoPro-Player/ta-p/413305 Why they do this I have no idea but a lot of mobile phones also have these problems because of the way they implement the various codecs they use to save on storage space on the memory cards.

Since this morning when I needed the information I downloaded my newest MEP onto a laptop which is still old but newer than the desktop I have done all my other Magix videos on in the past. The laptop computer is an Acer and is probably 5 years old at least but when the software asked to convert, it will actually play all of my videos whether they are phone, gopro or other. I assume it has something to do with the codec, of which I know very little about. I would still like to to be able to use magix on my old desktop. I need an extremely user friendly explanation, It would be nice if someone was able to walk me through getting those videos in the format for the desktop to use the Magix software.

Hi Marta.

To be clear about what you want to do and have done so far.

You want to put another copy of MEP 2021 onto your desktop?

That you have MEP 2021 running and working OK with all the file types you are currently using on your laptop?

That can be done, but first could you give first a full rundown on the laptop specifications meaning processor specs, ram amount, graphics card if you have an additional one and operating system with current build information.

Then the same for the Desktop.

This is to ensure that putting MEP 2021 on the desktop will work.

If we know the specs of the laptop and know MEP 2021 is working OK for you, we can then look at the specs of the desktop to try to ensure you can get the same functionality. Even if the desktop is newer there is no guarantee it will work or work as well depending on what internal parts it has.

I really appreciate your input but this is what is frustrating to me about magix not having a way to have a verbal conversation with tech help to clarify information. I'm not able to see and respond to this input at my leisure. The desktop is the older computer and frankly I don't know how old it is. I am able to find things out about how to do fairly simple or common tasks but it takes me awhile. I don't know right off how to find all the information you requested. If someone walks me through how to find computer info or problems it is better and faster for me. If I had to rely on this forum to use the Magix software for the videos I like to do, it just isn't time worthy for me. I've used Magix for over 10 years and I don't want to switch because it's what I know now and it takes me awhile to learn it. I still don't know all that it can do. I used the 2013 MEP on the desktop so its older than that. That version is STILL on the desktop and I can use it to do the videos I've always done. The 2013 version obviously won't let the gopro videos play smoothly. They will play video and the audio but the audio has a bad static sound which I found other people had by googling and they updated/paid for the newest version software as the fix. Another youtube video explained how to convert the gopro video's to MP3 and then use the audio part of the MP3 in place of the audio portion of the original gopro but that is time consuming and just gets around the problem. So I decided to buy the newest version and AFTER I downloaded the current 2021 MEP program ONTO MY DESKTOP and got into the program and tried to play a gopro video, it asked to download a " free codec" or whatever it is that reads the new gopro videos, THAT particular free download made ALL of my videos able to hear AUDIO but nothing else. My regular videos taken from a video camera and from our phones were ALL able to be used in the program previously and after the "free codec" NONE of the videos could be seen, only heard through an audio. So NOW I unistalled that FREE CODEC so it wouldn't convert ALL my videos and ONLY PLAY THE AUDIO. As I stated before, I actually have THREE versions of Magix on the desktop. One from 2013 and I'm not sure how old the other is, but both of those ARE usable for all other videos. We just got the gopro this year so this is the first time I had tried to play gopro videos through Magix. On the desktop, we are able to watch the gopro videos. So, I can try to find all the info you are requesting for the laptop AND the desktop if you still think that is the information needed but it would take telling me in simple terms where to find all of it on both computers. I just don't access that info, so I don't know exactly where to go to find it. We are happy with the gopro camera and don't have problems playing it on any of our "old" outdated computers. If I can't use the Magix on my old desktop, I would consider switching from Magix to a more user friendly program and one that doesn't depend solely on social media forums to provide technical help It took me forever yesterday just to figure out how to get this technical help. I just paid $70 for the program and it would be helpful to me to be able to have a conversation with someone to get this issue resolved instead of relying on back and forth computer responses.

Marta123 wrote on 11/22/2020, 8:05 AM

So what I meant by "when the software asked to convert".... AFTER the Magix 2021 was already downloaded and on BOTH the desktop AND the laptop and I opened the Magix software to get into it to DO A VIDEO, the very FIRST time I tried to place a GOPRO video into the timeline thing the MAGIX PROGRAM said it needed to DOWNLOAD a free codec or whatever its called to read the file so I DID that for BOTH the desktop AND laptop. The desktop is the OLDER computer and is the one that I went into detail about what it did in the above post. The laptop ended up working fine for the Magix program after it downloaded that, I'm assuming because it's somewhat newer and has whatever is needed to convert these files to play. I simply want to be able to use the Magix program on my desktop.

Hi Marta.

Did you ever read the minimum specs page for Movie Edit Pro 2021 to run before downloading it?

https://www.magix.com/gb/sem/movie-edit-pro/specifications/#c1199517

Please note that those are minimum specs and not necessarily a good user experience. Those specs should ideally be exceeded.

The reason for asking for the specifications for both machines is to find out if it will run on the desktop or not and why it is running and how well it is running on your laptop if you can't accurately work it out from the specs page.

If you can't do this I doubt anyone here can help you further. Sorry.

Ray.
