VPX New version - end May 2018

@browj2
I use WMV More than MP4 because it works for the type of work I am doing.
I need to know that it will play on all systems although I will use MP4 if I know it's going to be played on Mac.
MP4 tends to be a bit choppy when mixed to DVD.
I guess there are many ways of doing things but I know this works for me.
I will definitely look at the MXV.

Where can I find the selected effects on the Pro X v 10 menu?

DugsBugs wrote on 6/1/2018, 6:40 AM

Well I'm at a loss.
Magix have again created a pig.
Started a new multi cam edit today and the program just spontaneously shuts down at any time it wants and just opens a new project.
I am finding I have to save after almost every change I make so I don't lose everything.
WTF do we need to do to get a program that WORKS.
Now I need to contact Support to see if I can get a link to the previous version so I can go back.
There are things I have been using for a long time that now don't work.
Lens correction now goes blurry when the effect is applied. I use this a lot for Gopro footage.
If someone from Magix reads this. PLEASE GET IT SORTED.
Doug.

Can someone tell me what the previous version was before this update?
I am hoping it was 15.0.4.176
I am going to have to re install the program (Probably a factory reset as well) and roll back to 15.0.4.176 so I can keep doing what I do.
I have the installation file to that update so I'm hoping it will work.
The current update is useless and I should have known better than to install it.

@DugsBugs

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you're having problems. It seems that we just got a version with almost everything working and then they come out with a new version, radically changed, and new bugs.

Latest previous version: 15.05.211

Did you try copying and pasting all to a new Movie, deleting the original and then continuing on? Sometimes a movie gets corrupt for no reason and the above trick works. I had to do this the other day with a project; it kept crashing just opening and pressing on Play.

For the mxv files, this is a Magix proprietary format, to be used only in Magix' programs. You will see that Magix uses this for many things, including transition effects. I use it also for intermediate clips, especially when I am using Neat Video. Since the format is mxv, I know that the clip is not a final one, but is for use in a project. It is less compressed than mp4. I use mp4 for my final output, except when burning to DVD or BD.

Good luck getting v15 back!

I still am not getting any update/upgrade message and now I'm not in a hurry to upgrade.

Has anyone else experienced major headaches with this new version?

@browj2
Thanks John CB.
Not sure how the copy and paste works. Haven't needed to do it before.
I guess for the moment, I'm going to have to change my habits.
When I get into the zone and start clicking,cutting and moving, I tend to forget about saving all the time.
I know I can set it to auto save but that has caused problems for me in the past so i don't use it. Maybe I'll try it again.
If I slow things down a bit and change my ways a bit then I may get around the problem until they fix it.
You are right about the last update working so well. Why did they feel the need to muck with it.
I have contacted Support in the hope I can roll back but I will probably need to do a complete wipe of my computer because there will still be evidence of the current update and won't let me roll back.
I am still wondering if it is partly a Windows update issue as well so doing a system wipe may help anyway.
Not looking forward to that .
Hopefully others will have the same issues so support don't say it's just me.
I'll keep you informed.
Very late here so you won't hear from me for a while.
Doug.

Save. In Movie 1, Ctrl+A (select all), Ctrl+C (copy), click on the plus button to create a second movie, Ctrl+V (paste). Delete Movie 1, Save as - give it a new revision. Close, open, see if it works ok.

I received a reply from Magix today and I'm installing the new version on one machine to test it.

One thing, MusicMaker is indicated on the download screen. The base is a free program and there is no need to download and install it unless you want to.

Has anyone else experienced major headaches with this new version?

German members are reporting crashes and spontaneous restarts with no error message. Possibly linked to a Prodad plug in in one case.One even said he had a blue screen which he can not remember when was the last time he had seen that!

Sill trying to finish a project (thank goodness) and have not updated yet, so nothing to report here. Interested to try the NVENC HW encoding but it seems this may only work with the Main Concept encoding and not with Intel encoder (which is logical...).

Last changed by Scenestealer on 6/2/2018, 6:06 AM, changed a total of 1 times.

Just spent the day on a full edit and I am a very happy camper.
Did the 242 update this morning and got through with no crashes or any issues at all.
I am now able to make adjustments to an object while in play mode and it keeps playing which I haven't been able to do for a long time.
My only problem now is my Magic Bullet Quick Looks are not applying. I get the preview to the effect but when I hit OK, it does weird things.
Hopefully they can address that one. I use it a lot.
So far 242 is great apart from that.
Doug.

I played around with V10 242 yesterday and left the computer on until well after midnight. I had one crash, maybe. Even the Task Manager was frozen. Strange. Other than that I had no major problems.

One German members that Peter mentioned started the update to patch 242 while still installing the additional content. VPX installer did not like this and caused a major problem. So, one should avoid doing the update until the additional content has been completely installed. I did this and had no problem.

I will be posting a list of bugs/errors in a short while. Nothing serious.

@willemb2

As I mentioned before, you can copy the ini file from Version X8 to X10 and have your previous setup. I did this with no ill effect. The program will not do it for you, as this is a new version in new folders. Magix will give you the same reply. Alternatively, you can recreate your settings.

In the image below, the folder ...Admin... is for my set up. You may have yours under your name if you installed under your name on your computer. I log into the Admin account on my laptop, but John on my Desktop.

VPX 16.0.1.242

Bugs:

  1. Looks like they forgot to put the link to the Movie Templates along with the various lengths.
  2. They forgot to put in the link to the folder under MAGIX Tools for XAR.
  3. They have added Cloud Import that opens a German interface.
  4. Templates tab: Image Objects - ColorFields and Pictures - the preview icons do not show. They are in the folder under Program Data, but they do not show up on the screen
  5. Templates tab: The vertical scroll bar cannot be dragged up and down, only sideways to expand/contract the listing window. The mouse indicator changes to a left/right arrow.
  6. Right-click on the audio part of a video track, no command for "Edit in external editor." This has been an intermittent problem, sometimes it's there, sometimes not.

Missing in action is the new feature, or at least, I can't figure out what they mean on the Magix.com web site or where this is in the program:

"Object extraction Exactly like you'd imagine. Video Pro X's new object extraction algorithm makes it possible to recognize and extract objects from videos."

Anyone know what this means?

@DugsBugs

I tried RG Magix Giant Quick Looks and didn't have any problems.

I use Pixelan FilmTouch Pro 2 which has many tools to make adjustments of the hundreds of presets, including vignetting and protecting certain colours. We were shortchanged with Quick Looks. The version that came with Pinnacle Studio a few years back has all of the controls to modify the settings of the presets within the program.

Does Magix have beta testers? ( I don't mean us end users). It seems like they were in a rush to release this version hence all of the bugs not even related to the new features.

browj2 wrote on 6/2/2018, 11:30 AM

@dougj

I'm sure that they do. In this case, it's a new version, requiring a new install. They have to freeze development at some point and create the installer and test it. While that is going on, they find bugs that have not been resolved so, instead of delaying issue of the new version, they issue it and a patch. In this case, the patch came a day or so after the main program. It would have been better to have issued both together.

I am thinking the quick looks is a Windows update issue.
The version I have is old coming from my VPX 6 disc.
I tried the effect in my VPX 7 and the problem was still there.
Interestingly, the effect still applies when I take a snap from the object and mix it down to WMV but it can not be previewed within quick looks.
I have downloaded the current magic bullet looks trial from their website to try out but it is very expensive to purchase.
As long as the effect still works then I can deal with it.
I have now found my arora menu templates are not working as thy used to.
The colors don't change when choosing between the different styles.
This happened to me once before but I don't know how I fixed it.
Again, the effect still works in the DVD but I can't preview it.
The thing I can't work out is why there are different bugs in different parts of the world.
The 242 update is working well for me and is a pleasure to edit with apart from the couple of things mentioned which may be caused by other things.
I would not hold back on installing the update because it can't be worse than the 236.
Doug.

Just a footnote to this comment.
I have sorted everything out. All the Quick looks and other effects issues I was having stemmed from the preview window size.
When I resized the window (Only slightly) everything worked fine. It was a chance discovery.
The menu issue has fixed itself as well.
Very happy with 242.

Hi Doug

Do you mean the monitor window(s) in VPX and did you have them set to an random size instead of say 1/2 or 1/4 HD. It is just that there is a theory that doing so puts more load on the system because the math to constantly resize the footage during preview is more complicated. Note sure I have seen hard evidence of this though.

Also are your graphics drivers absolutely current?

Peter

@Scenestealer
Hi Peter.
Yes that is correct.
I only use 1 monitor but I have no idea what size it is. I adjust it depending on how many channels I am using.
Sometimes I can be using 14 cameras and 13 live audio Channels from a multi track recorder in the one project.
I only stumbled over the remedy by going to full screen and found the fault wasn't there and when I went back to normal size, the problem returned so I adjusted it only slightly and the problem was fixed.
It was affecting Quick looks, as well as New Blue Essentials.
I was almost looking at updating the Quick Look effects. Glad I didn't.
It has only started since the VPX 242 update.
The monitor size has never been an issue in the 10 or so years I've been putting up with this dog of a program but like an old dog, I find it hard to learn new tricks so I've stuck with it.
Running smoothly now.
Doug.
