Vst stops working after adding vst fx

I add a vst instrument. Add my notes in midi editing. Play. Sounds works. Vst instrument playing fine. Select a different channel. Add a vst fx. Save. Push play. Original vst instrument stops playing sound but indicates it's playing with audio

The standard Sound Forge plugins are DirectX plugins and all settings are stored as values in the Windows registry. Would it be possible to "convert" the old DirectX plugins into modern VST plugins?
