I don't know if this is sustainable. We are considering buying a new PC. If it had the same graphics card and a 6th-gen or later i7 processor, would 16GB of RAM be suffiient? Thing is, instore, the leap in price of desktops with 16GB to 32GB is huge, and I would rather buy one in person than order online. I know you get better specs for your money online, but if the PC goes wrong, you have to mail it back.

Hi

. . . . If it had the same graphics card . . .

If you mean transplant the NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1050 Ti to a new PC, IMHO it should not be necessary however Roger and Peter (Scenestealer) may disagree with me 😜, however you can, just make sure it does not disable the Intel integrated GPU.

My editing PC only has 16Gb DDR4 ram at the moment and you saw in my previous post the speed I am getting. You don't need the graphics card with a 6th Gen i7

John on the contrary, I have removed my nVidea graphics card and am getting much faster processing speeds, on your advice I may add 😀

I am looking at this PC. Will it suffice?

http://www.argos.co.uk/product/6995748

Mark, that will certainly do the trick, BUT you don't need the Graphics card for video editing and an Argos bought PC will come with preloaded bloatware that will constantly give you popup ads and reminders for things that you don't need. I don't know where you are based, but there are plenty of small PC build companies around that will build you a bloatware free PC that would match that one in performance for a few hundred £s less. Mine took less than a week to have built and would have been even less if I hadn't specified a graphics card. Easy to be wise afterwards.

Roger

MCK wrote on 11/20/2017, 5:38 PM

Where I live, choice is limited and delivery is slow. I do not know of any local companies who build PCs, and I cannot wait a week anyway... honestly.

So if the graphics card is not as important as I thought, I could save a few quid and buy this one instead?

http://www.argos.co.uk/product/6997375

Even with pop-ups, it can't be as slow as my current PC.

RogerGunkel wrote on 11/20/2017, 5:59 PM

I would say that would be a better bet and would save you a couple of hundred £s. You could probably just pull out the graphics card as the Intel i7 graphics may have been overridden by the nVidea, but you may also be able to select the one you want to use. You will get help from us on how to do that if needs be. If you find you can work well without the nVidea card, you may be able to Ebay it and get the extra 16Gb ram😀

Hi

@RogerGunkel, @MCK

I was not advocating putting the NVidia card (back) in, just saying you could if you wish, perhaps I should have added you would not gain any significant advantage over the i7 if you did.

With respect to the PC's Mark has linked to - if they have been 'tuned' specifically for gaming then IMHO this would need undoing - a gaming machine has no significant performance advantage when used for video editing and I feel you are paying extra for the 'gaming' element eg the flashy case, lighting and other none essential gizmos that often are part of the PC's.

I would be looking at something more like this one, the money you save you can add another hard drive, up the RAM to 32GB and still have change left.

Cheers

Thank you, Roger. Just checked, estimated delivery up to November 27th. Quite genuinely, I cannot wait that long. I am fast running out of time and every day counts. Am going to phone the PC repair shop in the morning to see if they can upgrade my PC lickety-split, i.e. within the next two days. Now that you have told me that th graphics card does not need to be changed, I might get the bill down to under £700.

RogerGunkel wrote on 11/20/2017, 7:05 PM

On Amazon Prime, if you have an account they guarantee delivery for 22nd November. It also says you can get express delivery which will cost a bit more if you are not on Prime

Hi Mark

So if the graphics card is not as important as I thought, I could save a few quid and buy this one instead?

I believe that second one you linked would be perfect and it is almost identical to the spec of my current setup (see my signature).

I would keep the GTX1060 6GB if I were you as I feel it gives me some small advantages in timeline playback and encoding speed. More card than that is a waste of money and if you get a PC built then try the 1050Ti that you have and make sure they enable both GPU's (Nvidia and Intel). There is no downside in having both on board as you can choose which one does the timeline preview in MEP and VPX program settings, and the iGPU will pick up the Hardware encoding automatically when it is called for in the Export settings.

Personally I would start with 16GB (2x8GB) of RAM and add more later if Task Manager shows it is maxing out. I have never seen an instance even with several P in P tracks of 4K previewing, where my RAM hit more than about 11GB usage (Has anyone?). To be fair though I have not done much 4K editing beyond testing.

Hey !
With the music in the project, you probably discovered too much. What do you say the copyright owners. Maybe they will say ok, but Youtube as you share it on the bank will reject.
On the margins, you get a nice couple, especially the bride

Hi Zatoron,

The music on their video is supplied by them and is purely for their own use at home. They also get a short version with our supplied copyright free music that they can put on Youtube if they wish. We don't put anything online at all and we also give them the copyright to their videos. Their is no music playing on the video I uploaded here so no copyright is infringed. After 50 years in the music business as a musician, songwriter and recording studio owner, and over 30 years as a video producer, I like to keep on the right side of copyright 🙂

After taking nearly a day to come up with a quote for upgrading my PC with in-stock parts, the repairer revealed that the bits would have to be ordered in. So, in desperation, I bought this PC from Currys...

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/hp-omen-880-013na-gaming-pc-10164741-pdt.html

Wanting to hedge my bets, I then ordered the Zoostorm from Amazon after a rep promised to get it delivered tomorrow. Only after placing the order was I told that this could not be done... so it might not turn up until next week. If it does turn up in the next couple of days, I will return the HP to Currys as it is much pricier. This was, by the way, the only i7 desktop PC for sale in and around the nearby city. Shop locally, huh?
