Hi John. It's just finished. A look at the new folder on the external drive shows 753 GB. After I've copied over any important files, it will be time to unbox the new PC. By coincidence, the cleaned-up audio has arrived, so I should soon be ready to go.

Hi Mark

Thanks for letting us know. What was the total time taken - about 6 - 7 hours?

Yes, that's about it. Just opened the packaging for the new PC. There seems to be some stuff INSIDE the PC, and a big warning about removing internal packaging before using the computer! Great... some instructions would have been nice!

Hi Mark,

I have to ask, how on earth did you end up with 753Gb for one project? That's 7 times what I would use for an all day wedding shoot with 3 cameras. How many hours of footage have you got and in what format?

Roger

MCK wrote on 11/25/2017, 3:44 PM

Hi Roger. All shot in 4K. The film is about 94 mins long, and the folder contains everything we filmed. The lot. Perhaps that explains it?

MCK wrote on 11/25/2017, 4:10 PM

New PC up and... crawling. OMG. It cannot even cope with installing Video Pro X. Has got stuck at 3%. Not looking good at all.

My weddings normally end up about 90-100 mins long from about 4 hours of footage. about half of that would be in 4K and the rest in 1080. How many hours of raw footage did you end up with?

It is most likely going through the process of checking and updating all the pre-installed bloatware, which could slow down things considerably. My current i7 system took about 40 mins to download the programme, but that is down to my broadband of course and about the same to completely install the basic programme. It took a similar time to put in the add ons such as Mercalli, NewBlue Effects etc.

If you have already downloaded the programme, turn off the wifi to save it slowing the installation down.

I am going to re-box the computer and send it back. After my previous post, it froze, completely. I have to finish the film within a week and can't afford to waste time. Never had this happen before.

Apologies... more advice needed. I have arranged to return the new PC. It couldn't even manage a factory reset... got stuck at 9%. This means the PC still has my sign-in details... any thoughts? Also, I need to choose between the two previously-discussed computers. The HP has a better graphics card, but is £500+ more expensive. Do you still feel that the Zoostorm will cope?

New PC seems to be working! I am trying to load the prject, and Video Pro X says it can't find a sound file... but it is there, right where it should be. Nothing I do is convincing the software that the file exists. Am I missing something?

MCK wrote on 11/26/2017, 11:49 AM

Interesting... I copied it another folder, and that did the trick!

MCK wrote on 11/26/2017, 12:02 PM

HELP! All seemed to be going well. I had copied the backup folder from an external hard drive to the new PC and began opening the project. But after some time, a message appeared saying the project could not be loaded... something about codecs. It offered me the choice of ignoring, which would affect the movie, or cancelling. Can anyone advise?

Scenestealer wrote on 11/26/2017, 4:44 PM

Hi Mark

It may be just prompting you to install the mpeg4 codec or maybe Mpeg2 codec, just depends what codecs the imported original material is using. Usually, the first time Mpeg 4 material is added to the timeline you get a prompt asking if you would like to download the codec or you can just go to the Top Menu> Help > Download additional content and download from there.

By the way I think that Argos PC we discussed earlier looks much better than that Zoostrom. It has a faster processor the 7700k at 4Ghz stock, plus watercooling (according to the website photos - not mentioned in the text) and a better case that should keep it quieter under rendering loads. It has an SSD also which can add slight benefits during project loading and when creating additional files like "create waveform" files.

I am on my third new PC. The first two were clearly faulty. The third was a breeze to set up, but so far I see no evidence of it being any better than my old one. The coming week will tell. I ignored the warning messages - about eight of them - and then gave up work for the night as the software wanted to create proxies... another full evening lost as my brand new £1299 PC struggled to cope. Hope to resume work tomorrow!

RogerGunkel wrote on 11/27/2017, 4:04 AM

Hi Mark,

Just taking a step back here, you set up the new PC, then I presume you went on line to check that the latest Win10 updates were installed? Often these systems are built and shelved and are not always up to date. Having done that, you should then have installed VPX, then carefully downloaded and installed the add on programmes. The next step should have been to download and install the extra content, which usually includes codecs as Peter said, or the message will appear when you try to bring in an mp4 file etc.

I don't know if you are trying to run the project from the external HD, but personally I would transfer the entire project folder back into the new PC HD for efficiency. The programme may be struggling to access the files fast enough from the external drive especially as you have over 700Gb of 4k files. That's also probably why it is asking about proxy files, although you may have the programme set up to automatically make proxy file on import, which you will need to disable.

Finally, have you checked that the PC is using the Intel graphics rather than accessing the graphics card?

Roger

MCK wrote on 11/27/2017, 5:13 AM

Hello Roger. All in place... but may I ask how to check the graphics card? Device manager?

MCK wrote on 11/27/2017, 8:40 AM

I have looked at Device Manager, under Display Adapters it shows Radeon (TM) RX 580. Do I disable it? Not sure how to proceed.

MCK wrote on 11/27/2017, 1:58 PM

This is my new, high-spec, £1299 PC...

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/hp-omen-880-013na-gaming-pc-10164741-pdt.html#srcid=11026

.... and I have had to abandon it and resume work on my old one. The HP is slow - so slow - and, a few minutes ago, VPX froze completely, mid-nothing. So now I'm back to square one.

RogerGunkel wrote on 11/27/2017, 2:04 PM

Hi Mark,

Sorry to hear you are still having problems, makes no sense to me.

My system would only recognise my nVidea graphics, so I took the side panel off and removed the card. I was then able to access the intel graphics without too much problem.

Roger

MCK wrote on 11/27/2017, 2:07 PM

Is that the only way of doing it?

RogerGunkel wrote on 11/27/2017, 2:07 PM

Just looked at the Currys PC, looks ok but can't see the point of the SSD apart from faster programme loading and boot up. Where did you install VPX, on the SSD or 2TB drive?

Roger

MCK wrote on 11/27/2017, 2:10 PM

Something called Data.

MCK wrote on 11/27/2017, 2:11 PM

Or was that the project folder? Just gonna check.

MCK wrote on 11/27/2017, 2:19 PM

VPX is on C. All the folders are on D. When using the HP, I decided to try externally editing the audio, and the Magix Editor came up. But each time I finished using it. upon returning to VPX, all of the footage was playing at extremely high speed in the right hand monitor. After that, the option to edit audio externally just disappeared... gone... awol. I don't understand any of this.
