CANNOT EXPORT MOVIE

Tonight's screening postponed for a week due to the weather. So premiere is this Saturday. The new Blu-Ray went weird the first time we tried to play it, but then worked second time around. Except the work I had done on it over the weekend was missing. And, no, I have no idea why.

Am re-doing it. And a new problem is baffling me (yes, another). When I import files, they push everything to their right away, creating a gap. This has never happened before. Can anyone help me put this right?

Ok, think I've sorted that one... Insert modes, I believe. But I am perplexed by what happened earlier. A batch of changes have disappeared, even though my PC has been always on and VPX always open. Am going to strive for a better version for Saturday.

Hi Mark,

Well at least the postponement gives you some breathing space.

As regards changes disappearing, that sounds as though they may not have been saved somehow. If you have automatic saving turned on you could try a backup file. I have my auto save set for 10 min saves just incase I forget to save as I go. You also mentioned that you keep the PC and VPX turned on, whereas I save regularly and shut down then reboot the PC to make sure all the Ram memory is cleared out on a regular basis.

Thanks Roger. All noted. By the way, I spotted in the burn dialogue that h264 (?) is selected rather than MP4. Is this wise?

RogerGunkel wrote on 12/12/2017, 4:09 AM

H264 files are mp4 so I would think that you should use the same setting that gave you a successful burn previously. I don't use BluRay at all but I always export first to Full HD mp4 1080 25p to make my mp4 files, then compile a new timeline from the mp4s saved under a different project name ready for dvd burning. When you then go to burn DVD and presumably BluRay the programme will convert it to the correct format for burning during the rendering stage.

Thank you Roger.

Hi

. . . . H264 files are mp4 . . .

For clarification:

The MP4 file format is what is known as a container file, this means it can contain video and audio in a variety of different formats, of which h.264 is one of them.

h.264 is a codec format not a file format and is used in several other file formats as well as mp4,eg MPEG-2 and MOV.

When burning to DVD the file format will be changed to VOB which is based on a restricted mpeg format.

@MCK

Good luck and best wishes for the upcoming presentation.

That seems to suggest that I would be better off selecting MP4 when about to burn?

Saved project, re-started PC. opened VPx, opened project... and now it is telling me that it cannot find a whole list of scenes, FX and music. How is this even possible?

browj2 wrote on 12/12/2017, 11:06 AM

If I recall, you put everything onto an external HD. Is that HD on and awake? Does it still have the same drive letter? When you navigate to the folder container the first object that VPX can't find, is it still the same place as before?

We still can't see what you have done and you have not given us screen shots and sufficient details, so it is hard to know how to reply.

Everything is on my PC. I decided to select "Skip All" and I can now see that some changes I made just before closing the project are still there, whereas files that I added a few days are missing. Some of these were originally on an SD card, but the software invited me to copy them, which I did.

RogerGunkel wrote on 12/12/2017, 2:03 PM

Every single file and folder that you are using and have included in the project should be in your master folder for the project. If you have added files to the project in the last few days, they should have first been dragged and dropped into you master project folder. If you did that, then they will still be there where you put them. If you added them to your timeline from the SD card, then the programme will still be looking for them there, so you will need to redirect it to where you stored them. They could only have 'disappeared' if they weren't put in the correct folder and the programme is looking elsewhere, or you saved under a different name or not at all.

It should be a simple matter of directing the programme to the files, or going to one of the backup files from before you added them, then reinserting them.

That seems to suggest that I would be better off selecting MP4 when about to burn?

If you have already broken the project into separate mp4 files and rendered them, then joined them up in a new timeline for burning to disc, then you should only need to go into the normal disc writing procedure. You don't have to re-render already rendered mp4 files.

Just to recap, you should have all files in a master project folder, these you should have brought into the time line for editing. As you were having major exporting problems, my suggestion was that you broke the timeline into smaller chunks so that they could be exported as mp4 HD files. These new mp4 files should then have been assembled on a new timeline under a new project name for disc burning.

The fact that you seem to be losing clips and files would suggest that you are not following that procedure, as all the sections would be complete rendered mp4 files. Can you confirm if you have been following that procedure, or if not, where you deviated from it.
