@Andrew-Thompson

Welcome to the Magix forums.

Why am I unable to capture footage on my new pc which is fitted with windows 10, programme is edit pro 17?

Why indeed? I'm sorry, but without a lot more information from you, we are highly unlikely to be able to help you.

First, please read this post and give us ALL the details requested there. At the moment we don't even know exactly which version and variant of MEP you have; you say "Edit Pro 17" but that doesn't really tell us, unfortunately. If you go to Help>About MAGIX Movie Edit Pro you will find the exact version number you have, the current latest is 19.0.2.49, and don't forget to say whether you have the Basic, Plus or Premium variants.

Also, you need to included full details of exactly how you are attempting to "capture footage", where from, using what technology etc., etc.

With your help, we should be able to advise and guide you!

Thanks for responding. To be honest, I was expecting a response along the lines of "Edit Pro 17 is too old to work with Windows 10". However, it seems that this may not be the case so here is a bit more info:

software is MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus, version 10.0.0.33

I am attempting to capture from my HDV camacorders, Canon HV 30 and HV20. I am doing this by using the "record audio/video" under the "file" toolbar icon. This is how I have done it for over ten years, without problem. What happens now though is this: camcorder is switched on and connected to pc via fire wire, the programme recognises the camcorder and is able to operate the camcorder from the on-screen "HDV recording" window. However, although image and sound are present on the camcorder viewfinder, nothing appears in the "HDV recording" window. I have tried a different fire wire in case that was the issue, and have also run a cleaning cassette through the camcorder.

Any thoughts please?

regards,

Andrew

Hi Andrew.

You say you have done this for years.

Do you have the appropriate drivers for the firewire interface?

Is your copy of MEP otherwise working OK?

If you can see and hear the video on the Camcorder it's not dirty heads. It could be a faulty lead. Try cleaning the connectors at both ends. use a glass fiber pen if you have one. Some form of alcohol with a cotton bud if you haven't. Could even be a dry joint.

Ray.

@Andrew-Thompson it may also be that the drivers for the camcorder/firewire is not fully compatible with Windows10. You can try running drivers - or even MEP, in compatibility mode for just the purpose of the capture process.

Thanks Ray. Perhaps I need to give tou a bit more background on the pc: it is basically my old pc which a friend (retired computor systems engineer) has installed a new SSD drive into. Would the fire wire driver need re-installing?

As I cannot record any video onto the programme I cannot test the functionality of the editing software, but to all intents and purposes everything else looks normal in the programme.

I tried an alternative lead, but no joy. Some information is clearly making it down the lead though, because the programme recognises both cameras when connected.

Hi

The issue is not the program, but the drivers you need to install for the FireWire device on Windows 10. MEP will not be able to see the FireWire device because Windows 10 may have installed the wrong drivers.

See this tutorial, in PDF format, I created in 2012 to install the correct drivers for you FireWire device although it refers to Windows 7 it also applies to any version of Windows after 7.

Once installed correctly you should be able to select the FireWire device in the programs record options and settings

Andrew-Thompson wrote on 1/8/2020, 11:08 AM

K, so a bit of online research has revealed the following: there is an issue with Firewire port compatability with windows 10. Apparently this mainly affects Dell computors....guess what I have? The information also suggests that installing a FireWire card into one of the open slots in computor could work.

Another recommended fix is to download a Legacy driver from the Microsoft Support page. Tried this, but "404 error" comes up so obviously Microsoft have bailed out. b******s.

I think I may need to open a new request on the forum asking if anyone using a Dell computor with Windows 10 has been able to resolve the FireWire issue?

. . . . I can't seem to open that on my iPad . . . .

You won't it is a link to a download, the iPad would not know what to do with it as it is a Windows installer file.

. . . . recommended fix is to download a Legacy driver from the Microsoft Support page . . . . Tried this, but "404 error" comes up so obviously Microsoft have bailed out . . . .

The support page you were linked to no longer exists, hence the 404 error.

The link above takes you direct to the download of the Firewire (1394) 64 bit legacy driver installer, an msi file, from Microsoft. Download it on the PC and then double click it to run the installer.

Hi

. . . . after installation gives the following message: "windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing.(code 39)" . . . .

After installation did you restart the computer - Windows button, Power button, Restart - not shutdown and restart.

I have installed the driver on my laptop and it installs correctly - you may have to go through the install procedure I linked to above again now that the driver is available for selection.

On my old computer, not a Dell, running Windows 10 I was able to capture via Firewire from an old JVC camera.

The procedure I posted as a result of the issues I had getting the Firework to work on Windows 10.

I have also commented in your other post about capturing via HDMI.

Yes, I can. Although my set up is somewhat different to yours, I run Win 10 1909 and can import, via Firewire, from my wife's (rather old) DV camera without problem. (I actually tend to use Video Pro X, rather than MEP, as my input software, but the import engine is the same, I believe.)

My external Audio Interface is also connected via Firewire and functions perfectly.

One thing to check, possibly; the dedicated FW card I have in my computer uses a TI (Texas Instruments) chipset, as advised by other users of my audio interface.

I should, perhaps, for completeness, add that I also have an internal Canopus analogue to digital convertor card, which also includes a Firewire connector, for conversion of analogue video footage to digital. So I have a number of Firewire connectors available to me!

before to do anything update your computer bios, now check on Canon website if your camera can be updated. FireWire port was great but Windows push out this technology.

Ok, so I have un-installed the driver, and then tried re-installing it. I get a yellow triangle with exclamation mark and message:"an installation package for the product 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller ((Legacy) cannot be found. Try again using a valid copy of the installation package '1394_OHCI_LegacyDriver(1) .msi

What do I do?

Update: my pal came around this morning,(the one who actually knows about computers, unlike myself) and eventually managed to get the FireWire Legacy driver installed correctly. After he had done an online search about the "specified account already exists" message which kept appearing, he downloaded and used "Microsoft Install Cleaner".

SUCCESS!!!

I have now managed to import the video from my Canon HV30 camcorder and edit it.

Here is the test footage as uploaded to youtube:
