Mp4s are showing up black, and it's unable to save my support request.

Howard-Hickman wrote on 7/25/2021, 8:05 PM

When I bring an MP4 into my timeline, the preview is black, I cannot make visual edits or anything of the sort. I've never seen this before.

Also, when I try to submit a support request it says that it cannot save my support request after about a minute of waiting.

Help would be appreciated.

Help would be appreciated. Ive only used MP4s until this point, and succesfully. Ive no idea why its a problem now. Is this a codec thing? Thanks in advance.....

Hi Howard.

I do not have a version that new so I'm not sure of the answer but basically you have no Intel or nvidia GPU the program can use for hardware acceleration so you need another setting that can (I think there now is an additional Windows setting) or you need to disable anywhere it says use hardware acceleration for playback.

I hope someone on the forum using the latest version can add additional information.

Hi Howard

It could be your Hardware acceleration (in program settings), try changing all three to Intel UHD graphics. I have had this problem.

Hi Don.

Hi Howard.

What are you using to create the original video files?

Have you a file we can use from a Dropbox or Google account we can try out to see if it is the files?

They have to be files not altered from uploading to the net so a video hosting site will not do.

Ray.

@CubeAce No, however I am confident it is not the files, as they work in other video editors. OpenShot, for instance is able to preview Mp4s that MVPX is not currently able to preview for some reason. So I do not believe the files to be the problem. A family member has told me it might be a "Codec problem" do you think that might be the issue?

Again, thank you for your effort in helping me.

CubeAce wrote on 7/26/2021, 5:01 PM

@Howard-Hickman

Hi Howard.

To view video codec information you need MediaInfo and look at the text view to see it or copy and paste the information here for us to look at. It would be easier just to test one of the problem files though.

When I asked what created the files I was looking for something that could create problem codecs. To tell me it's not the video files but could be a codec problem is a contradiction of statements.

On a separate note I did forget to ask if you have nvidia DCH Studio drivers loaded and not the game ready drivers. You would need nvidia DCH drivers for the software to use with the nvidia card.

The drivers can be found in the nvidia control panel under help \ System information. It will also tell you what level of Direct X it can handle.

I posted all that to say: I love Magix Video Pro X. Its really been amazing and Ive been following the same formula, video after video, but learning each time and trying to improve.

I gotta admit, IM a little nervous the ride is over, lol. Magix has been seamless until now. I cant figure it out, and I hope it ends up being trivial, and I can get back to creating.

I appreciate everyone's input and advice.

thank you,

about to get Mediainfo and post video data, but from my understanding, the videos are fine, and something in Video PRO X (very recently) changed, as far as how it handles MP4s, perhaps a missing codec I presumed? I havent changed any settings......

@Howard-Hickman

Good morning Howard.

Thank you, yes that is the information I needed.

The data shows there is nothing really wrong with the file and should be playing. The lines regarding the GOP structure are a bit different to what I normally see but is so undemanding as a video file it should work on something clockwork powered.😞

I have been looking through other forum posts as I don't have VPX 13 (your version) and I do know that at present it is full of bugs and still under a lot of development. You should look at this main forum topic for VPX 13.

It would seem my initial reaction that hardware acceleration should be turned off on your system would be correct but for the wrong reasons. The wrong reason being that currently nvidia hardware acceleration is not working in VPX 13 as it should be and may not be working at all.

John Baker who is the main moderator for this forum (Not Magix staff but a fellow user) has stated on that forum topic that he cannot get the nvidia settings to work on VPX 13. He has so far only been able to get the Intel GPU to work or to use the Windows acceleration via the CPU to work, so for you the settings at present until a software update to cure this is available should look like this.

As far as I'm aware, that fault has not been fixed yet.

You will be able to see most of the recorded problems / potential bugs so far on that link. There are a few other bugs on other forum topics not mentioned there but none relating to your current problem.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . I do not believe hardware acceleration to be the issue. . . . .

The graphics card is below the minimum spec of a GTX 1050, it may provide some hardware acceleration, however not enough for playback. According to the Nvidia driver search, Studio drivers are not available for the GTX 680 so this is not an option.

Ray has given you the most viable option above which will should give some hardware acceleration and should fix the black video issue.

. . . . MP4s function normally on this PC with . . . .

Comparing VPX 13 to other video editors does not give you a true perspective on what will happen when importing video. Comparison with any video player has no bearing at all on what will happen in any video editor.

@CubeAce How might I go about turning off hardware acceleration? What I mainly don't understand is that it wasn't like this until recently, I've been editing on this program for almost a year now. But I appreciate all the help you and @johnebaker have given so far.

Hi Howard.

Just set the settings to my image I posted above. The settings as well as the new Infusion engine has changed since VPX 12. This version of VPX has not been out one year. Just s few weeks. It was VPX12 where you were able to use the nvidia card. The processing stakes have obviously gone up a notch even though the specs page doesn't seem to have changed.

I've been looking at the specs for your card very carefully and it can not accept all direct X implementations beyond Direct X 11 and its Kelper chip it uses may have some problems if the motherboard is using the newer UEFI bios which I'm assuming your new motherboard is using when you added it to your upgraded system.

The card is discontinued and as John pointed out never had Studio drivers so why it may have done some 3D rendering work in the past was probably never fully utilised within VPX for video rendering as explained in this nvidia information.

The problem with new versions of a program is they are programmed to cope with the latest peripheral requirements of new cameras and the needed processing power associated with those requirements.

Whenever I have bought a new camera in the past I have nearly always had to update my editing packages to cope with the new files they produce. Then in turn the program needs better computer specs to run the programs.

My general rule of thumb is never upgrade unless there is a real need rather than a want, hence my last upgrade of my computer happened a year or so ago when I eventually over a couple of years switched from photography to video work more. I suspect within another two to three years my current system will no longer cope with new versions of this program.
