@Trevor-Smith

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing this problem but you haven't really given we fellow-users much information to enable us to attempt to help you!

First, can you please read this post and give us ALL the details requested there about your computer, version and build of Windows and the exact version number of MEPP which you have? The latter information can be found by going, in the app, to Help>About Movie Edit Pro.

With rather more information we may well be able to help you.

Ok so, after trying just about everything to get this downloaded Magix software (Movie Edit Pro 2021) to work properly, I am very close to asking for my money back.

I ran the demo version for a full month, without it crashing even once. I actually grew to like the software and what it offered. So much so that I decided to purchase it yesterday Serial Number removed by Moderator

Now, as I am attempting to simply apply some title effects over top of an avi. file (that was rendered in Magix Movie Edit Pro itself) I am constantly freezing, crashing and loosing my saved work.

The program won't even deliver crash logs, claiming it cannot detect an internet connection, seconds after it was downloaded FROM THE INTERNET!

My computer meets all the system requirements to run the software (12 GB of RAM, with an Intel core 15-7400 CPU @ 3.00 GHZ processor), and I have saved one copy of an error file but it is way too long to copy and paste in this message.

I am not happy about this. I have wasted a full day already, uninstalling and reinstalling the program with no change to its lack of performance.

If there is a solution, I am more than willing to do what I need to on my end. However, if no one has any answers I am done with this product and will expect to be compensated.

@Trevor-Smith

Please do not post confidential data, like your serial number or email address to this public forum. If you do, you risk your account and software being hijacked, not to mention the possibility of spam! Hence I have edited your post.

We need to know rather more detail about the .avi files you are using. I wonder whether they are "uncompressed avi", a file format which taxes most, if not all, computers and video editing softwares. Please download and install the free MediaInfo, point it to one of these files and post the results of the Text view here.

Nothing about the spec of your computer strikes me as seriously below spec so I doubt that that is an issue, though I have to say that I would always try to have more RAM than you currently have. However, two important facts are missing from your details: the version and build of Windows you are running; the size, type and free space available on your hard drive(s).

@KokShin-Yon

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

Your post has really nothing to do with the subject of this thread. Hence I have hidden it. Please start a new thread with your question, making sure you include full details of your computer, version and build of Windows, exact version and variant of MEP which you have (you can check under Help>About...) and full details of what you were doing when the app stopped. Please read this post and give us ALL the information requested there.

Thank you.

Thanks Jeff.

I will never pretend to be at all computer literate, so I greatly appreciate your advice and help.

As for the Windows 10 version I am running, it was 1909 but I am currently in the process of updating it to version 2004. I have no clue whether or not that is connected to my problem.

With Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium 2021 uninstalled from my computer, I have 141 GB of free (C:) drive storage space available.

I will also try and see if the .avi file is in fact "uncompressed", as per your advice.

Thanks again.

I'll keep you posted.

Hi Trevor.

I think Jeff is correct.

You have produced a file that is about eight times larger than it needs to be and your PC is probably struggling to play it back.

Remember the specs page is giving minimum specs for MEP to run and I agree with Jeff that you probably need more ram. 16GB is a reasonable starting point for smoother playback of larger file sizes. If you open Task manager while MEP is running you may be able to see how much ram is being used. I work mainly with 4K files and am constantly using more than 20GB of ram. I am seriously considering going from 32GB to 64GB of ram but that may be overkill for most users.I do occasionally I also run out of ram which can cause crashes.

@Trevor-Smith

Thanks for the MediaInfo data.

It shows that your file plays for just under 50.8 seconds and is 4.41 GB. Despite the info showing that the IYUV codec is being used I think we can safely say that it is "Uncompressed"! If my maths is correct, that equates to about 312 GB per hour. With only 141 GB of free space on your C:\ drive, there is clearly very little space for MEP to use, even for temporary files (and I notice you have uninstalled MEP 2021). Also, the "overall bit rate" of "748 MB/s" is of a magnitude that is going to cause problems for any video editing package, I think.

So, possible solutions? You need to convert that file to a much smaller size. The free Handbrake is where I would suggest you start! You will need to experiment with its options but I would suggest a starting point of .mp4 as the output format. A number of users here, myself included, also use the (paid-for) MovAvi Video Convertor Premium but I have never asked it to handle a file of that size so don't know how/if it would handle it.

One other thing: you said that MEP 2021 was now uninstalled. Unfortunately, the standard Windows Uninstaller doesn't actually remove everything - which you really need to do before attempting any reinstall - because it doesn't actually know anything about any folders etc. which were created when the app was run. So, before you even think of a reinstall, can I urge you to read and follow carefully the process detailed in this tutorial? Although written as a guide to help users experiencing problems following the upgrade to Win 10, it is also the method to use to ensure you remove ALL the previous installation and can then start again "with a clean sheet".

And no, I don't think the update to Win 10 2004 will help your original problem in any way, sorry!

Jeff

I really appreciate your help. I'm really just picking up the editing thing now, and really have no clue how to run things with true technical efficiency.

Is there any way to compress the file?

You've been incredibly helpful today.

CubeAce wrote on 10/2/2020, 11:19 AM

@Trevor-Smith

I think Jeff's solution of using Handbrake is your best bet to reduce the file size for now.

While the AVI uncompressed video codec is lossless it does produce huge files unless you know how to set up the parameters carefully for a particular use. Personally I never use it but some people here do find uses for it when digitising film or old VHS tapes.

Can I ask what you used it for? If for archival purposes I wouldn't bother unless you are digitising analogue video or film. You are better off using the original files or at least copies of them as there is no quality increase benefit to be had by copying them to another format.

Hi Trevor.

Regarding your comments on your second post.

It may Help you to know there are no Magix staff present on the forums here, only fellow users. So there is no interaction here between Magix and users. To get any response from Magix employees you have to go through the Magix help support system.

As for not finding an internet connection. It is possible that Movie Edit Pro is still doing some housekeeping in the background for the first few hours after it is installed and run for the first time. That may have caused the problem.

When Jeff and I were talking about ram usage. It can be the cause of freezing of the program or crashing if the ram gets fully used up and then can't continue to move data around on the C: hard drive when the ram runs out. It can also cause the program to slow down.

Even modest projects can quickly use up ram and adding titles is one way of increasing that.

Here are a few examples of different ram usage on my system while exporting a 3 minute MP4 video at 4K.

Hi Trevor.

It's our pleasure to help if we can.

I'm sure we learn as much from helping others sometimes when we try to recreate other users problems so it can be of mutual benefit. I'm also sure we have all been there ourselves in the early stages. I know I have and the kindness of the more experienced users here certainly helped me. Also I am far from having learnt everything yet. That may take a few more years 😂

So, unfortunately, the problem persists.

I compressed the .avi file down to a 12.8 MB M4V file, using Handbrake, I deleted every Magix folder still present on my computer after the last uninstall of Movie Edit Pro Premium, and I also updated to the most current version of Windows 10.

...but, after reinstalling Magix once again, the editing program still crashes (like clockwork) as soon as I attempt to create any more than 2 separate titles (using the Blown by the Wind or the Dramatic Zoom templates with a change of font, font size and color). I am completely stumped as to why it continues to happen. I was using the demo version in much the same way, up until yesterday, and never had any issues. It really seems to me to be a program glitch.

Hi

I cannot replicate this issue with the titles you have used, I did note that some fonts are not compatible with the Dynamic titles, which fonts are you using?

When you re-installed MEP 2021 did you them apply any updates - the last patch brought the MEP version up to 20.0.1.65. If your version is not up to the current one, then check for the update - Help, Update online.

Try resetting the program to its default settings - File, Settings, Reset program settings... - note this will reset any customisations you have made to folder paths etc.

Hi Trevor.

If Johns' suggestions don't help try the following to get more data.

Like John, I can't get MEP to crash doing this but it is impacting on my system. It is not running smoothly without rendering the timeline.

I set up a 1080p 50fps test to check this out as that has less impact on my system.

The first thing I noticed is the ram usage on even a small part of using that effect twice using the same font in each but changing the colour is close to 8GB. The second thing I noticed was the Intel CPU maxing out one of my 16 virtual cores as the Intel GPU is not doing any video decoding. There is some video decoding being done by my nvidia GPU and it is also using an amount of its ram as well. I assume that is also being handled by your CPU putting extra load on it.

Try looking at your own computers performance using Task Manager and see if there is anything obvious going on. Keep an eye on ram usage and CPU usage using only one title to begin with.

Also if you haven't already done so go to Settings / System / Graphics settings / Choose an app to set preference / and Select MAGIX Video Deluxe Plus (or similar, no idea why mine says plus) and select Power saving in the selection box.

@CubeAce

Hi

. . . . it is impacting on my system . . . .

Same here especially for the Blown by the Wind title - there is a high degree of processing for this particular dynamic title and, as titles are not hardware accelerated, the CPU load is high.

@Trevor-Smith

Hi, I have re-read your posts and noticed that you did did not give your full computer specification as requested by @emmrecs

What is your processor make and model?

. . . . I have 141 GB of free (C:) drive storage space available. . . . .

That appears to be a small amount of free space - is this a laptop with a single SSD drive?

Laptop or not, is there a second bigger drive installed in the computer?

Does MEP 2021 crash if you use Basic title templates?

When it 'crashes' does MEP just close, stop responding or what?

If it stops responding did you wait or kill the program in Task manager?

Hey guys.

First off, thanks for all your help.

I did end up trying to play around with some basic title templates, and had no issues with the program crashing on me. After that I called it a day, and took a break from my computer.

I'm pretty sure this is just a RAM issue for me, which to be honest I had not even really considered until you had suggested it.

Our home computer was never really purchased with the intent that it would be used for extensive video editing, and I think my ignorance of its capabilities got the better of me initially.

I have been extremely impressed with how helpful this forum has been, and I will explore every bit of advice you all have offered.

Thanks again, and have a wonderful weekend.

Hi Trevor.

No problem.

Just one other question. Why did you convert the file you were using to another Apple based wrapper (M4V) rather than say MP4 that MEP could handle much easier? Are you exporting these files to an Apple product or doing it for disc space?

If the latter, be careful as you may end up losing quality of your recordings. The final converted file now seems too small for a 55 second clip but then again I've never used MV4 to see its compression ability or comment with certainty. It may well be fine. I was just curious more than concerned.

Hi

. . . . I'm pretty sure this is just a RAM issue for me, which to be honest I had not even really considered until you had suggested it. . . .

Not necessarily!

You have not answer the all the questions I asked, I did find your processor type :

  1. Is this a laptop with a single SSD drive?
  2. Laptop or not, is there a second bigger drive installed in the computer?
  3. When it 'crashes' does MEP just close, stop responding or what?
  4. If it stops responding did you wait or kill the program in Task manager?

It could be the RAM and/or the CPU may be overheating if the fan or cooler fins are clogged with dust which can lead to further 'crashing' when using effects as the load on the CPU will make it heat up quite quickly, this should be mitigated by the built in thermal protection should slow the processor speed down reducing performance and it may appear to have stopped responding.

Check that the computer is clean internally particular the processor fins and fan? I clean mine at least once per year, using a can of compressed air or 'The Rocket' air blower (for cameras) and a vacuum cleaner to capture the air born dust from blowing out the heat sink and fans.

Hey guys.

A little while back, I was on here clamoring for tech support. Magix was crashing on me, and I was completely out of my depth.

I just wanted to thank you all again, for getting me through that little stretch of trouble I was having. Since then, the program has been absolutely incredible to use.

I've attached a YouTube link to the latest project I edited with the software. Don't really know how much you guys share your work with each other, but I thought some of you might be interested.

Anyway, thanks again.

Hi Trevor.

Good to see you have sorted your problems.

We do see the odd video now and again. Nice to see the spread of various topics covered by individuals.

First mockumentary I've seen anyone produce here. Loved the rubber knife and rabbit glove puppet.
